its absolutely ridic in this day and age that the 1/2f pole it identical to the pole on finishing line...its asking for trouble and this has caused this to happen many times...why not make the one on line yellow and rest white....cost peanuts to eradicate this from reoccurring.

Nevertheless I feel sorry for the bloke.
Report Willie Shafter. March 25, 2017 2:13 AM GMT

Report jamilla14 March 25, 2017 7:31 AM GMT
Stewarty B - you point out that Michael Barzalona won the Derby on Pour Moi despite standing up in the stirrups before reaching the winning line. I believe the rules are that jockeys should not drop their hands, if involved in a first 4 finish, until they have crossed the line.
If a jockey stops riding and gets caught by a short head, his actions are no different to holding on by a short head and as such, should be punishable the same.
Report xmoneyx March 25, 2017 3:07 PM GMT

Report Cider March 25, 2017 3:22 PM GMT
It's still incredulous how the 1/2 furlong marker can possibly be mistaken for the wining line, by anyone. There's still a straight in front of you, no gaps in the rail, no cut strip, half the grandstand to go, no photo paraphernalia, no winning post.
Report Willie Shafter. March 25, 2017 3:26 PM GMT
i agree..but putting something identical to the winning post 100yds before it is asking for trouble...imo
Report Cider March 25, 2017 3:56 PM GMT
It's only potentially of any use for the jockeys, I guess they should decide if it's any use to to them or not. But to be fair, the winning post has a great big red circle on it!
Report Willie Shafter. March 25, 2017 3:57 PM GMT
can you see the red bit 100yds away side on?
Report Cider March 25, 2017 4:01 PM GMT
They're not side on to the jockey!
Report ProSniper March 25, 2017 4:06 PM GMT

Report Willie Shafter. March 25, 2017 4:13 PM GMT
thats my point cider
Report Cider March 25, 2017 4:20 PM GMT
If the jockey can't tell any other difference, or know where he is, the fallback is to keep pushing until he gets to the pole with the big red bit on it. I've seen plenty of examples where they've mistaken the line, but it can be seen why it possibly happened and one can empathise to some extent. On this example, there's no plausible excuse imo.

You really think those are the rules do you? Then why are there not bans every other day as I see it happening with my own eyes?

As for Michael Barzalona I thought he gave the horse a superb ride considering it was his first ever Derby. Yes he got a bit excited but the horse did win by a head and he never mistook the winning post..
