Sandown stages the traditional curtainraiser to the Cheltenham festival but the best way to boost your Festival bank balance is by backing Supersta to win the sunbets.co.uk Lincoln Trial Handicap on the all-weather at Wolverhampton (2.05).
The key to the horse is a strong pace at this track and hopefully he will get that today because if he does he has every chance of going one better than when an unlucky loser in the race 12 months ago.
On that occasion he suffered interference at a crucial stage but still went down by only a short-head and his form figures at Wolverhampton for his current trainer read 22112.
The key will be the pace, but it should be quick enough with a Mark Johnston runner stepping down in trip, as well as Emell and Holiday Magic, who like to race close to the front.
Furthermore, Silvestre de Sousa takes over for the first time and I expect Supersta to go close in a race in which there are big question marks about most of the others.
Baraweez also needs a good pace to run at and should improve on his comeback run, while Nimr is clearly in good heart at the moment, but Supersta really does look the one.
Realize wasn't as unfortunate as Supersta a year ago but he too didn't get the clearest of runs when third in the sunbets.co.uk Lady Wulfruna Stakes (3.15) and looks to have been trained for the race again.
You can forget his latest effort at Newcastle because he was too keen over the straight 7f and didn't see out the trip properly. This track will suit him a lot better and, while Jeremy Noseda's Keystroke is going to be hard to beat given the form he is in, Realize is well overpriced.
At Sandown there is a disappointing turnout for the Matchbook Imperial Cup Handicap Hurdle (3.00). The topweight is rated 138, which is the equivalent of number 44 among the entries for next week's County Hurdle at Cheltenham.
Given the prize-money and bonus on offer it really does make all the moaning we hear about prize-money from owners and trainers a little bit rich to say the least.
To be fair, it is the type of race that could easily be run at one of the smaller tracks during the week and, as much as I don't fancy the favourite Fixe Le Kap, finding one to back is not easy.
I would imagine David Pipe's Max Do Brazil is a lot better than he showed at Cheltenham, while Kayf Blanco has run well in much better races than this off his current mark.
Gassin Golf could bounce back for his decent claiming jockey, but I would rather have a couple of cracks in the European Breeders' Fund Matchbook VIP "National Hunt" Novices" Handicap Hurdle Final (1.50). The two I like are Cash Again for Paul Nicholls and Lithic for Jonjo O'Neill.
As usual I'm expecting Jonjo's horses to be peaking for Cheltenham and Lithic couldn't have won any easier at Huntingdon last Sunday. Of course this is a much better race and Lithic has a 5lb penalty, but he won with his head in his chest and is bred to be much better at this trip.
Cash Again has always been highly regarded and started joint-favourite with high-class bumper horse Jenkins on his debut for Nicholls. He ran really well that day but in truth has not been anywhere hear that level over hurdles.
However, he's handicapped accordingly and I'm expecting a lot better on a track that will be much more suitable than Fakenham, where he ran last time.

Pasting the whole PW column rather than just the selections is pushing it a bit imo. Bruce can point to it as a clear copyright infringement whereas the mere fact that Sir Tom has picked Flying Dancer and Dancing Flyer is probably OK. Because the forum mods know sod all about copyright law, they is a risk they will ban too much.

Slight problem. Given that (I assume) TS is forced to advertise the prices of bookies that no one can get a bet with, is "Pricewise" the right name for Tom's column? I might get £3-5 on with Billie's and perhaps something with bertway but not a penny with any of the others. Given that the PW selections are just as likely to drift as to shorten, forget scrabbling around trying to get on with the nonbookmakers. Instead stick to Laddies who (a) take a bet and (b) have the enhanced best odds guarantee offer (at least online, not sure about the shops.I went to back Go Far today but found it had shortened from 14s or so to 9/1. Decided to risk taking the price with the Magic. SP 14/1 but paid out with the BOG at 16/1. Better than I would have got before the cash piled on. Better than any "Free bets here" offer from the outfits you have never heard of.
