Did you know that in the early days of betfair it was not easy to become a member. In fact I might surprise you to tell you that I have a written contract with the worlds largest betting organisiaton .in the early days you could send cash by post, and all payments if you were lucky to win were paid by cheque.
You had to prove who you were and a driving licience and birth cert, had to be checked. This was done by fax machine. There was no broadband at the time.Bank accounts were checked before joining . later on and the electronic payments started.
In those days it was great to see the cheques mounting up on the mantle over the fire place.but alas those days are gone.
if you were a consistant winner you were called a sharp mind.If you backed in hundreds you were called a whale.
Like today the staff were very friendly, but they seemed to have more time in the past. Now nobody has a minute. In the old days guys would ring up and ask if "how are things"
and also ask if you had any problems. The forum would be buzzing with excitement and everyone would share tips and information.
A live football thread would get over 2000 posts.Forumites respected one another then. But now all has changed ,and the good old days are gone, sad really.Happy

We used to get great big parcels containing sheets and sheets of A4 paper listing ALL your bets individually -  and if a bet was broken down into, say, 20 different increments, then that is how they displayed on the sheets of A4, as in 'Betting History' nowadays online.

Those parcels must have cost Betfair a fortune to produce in paper and postage.

I am still using the reverse side of some of the A4 sheets as scrap paper.

Onlooker - I remember that. I often think, thirteen years on, how large my pile of A4 sheets would be had it continued.

in the early days , betfair needed people to bet to get things up and running , liquidity, popularity , word of mouth etc .

nowadays they don't .

think the slippery slope started when the celeb pro punters and the likes of that commentator who wrapped his job in to go pro betting in running with fast pics, labled the losers on here as clearing up the mug money
what was that commentators name had a baseball cap when pictured in a leeds trading office ,said he won because of his race reading expertise, failed to mention the 6 secs fast pictures he had, wonder if he,s still going ,making his millions

The fast picture horse racing punters must have made their millions. Wish I could have had a stab at it.

nah something immoral in taking money of people who didnt understand the fast pic thingy, not like they were taking it off the big buisness it self,in my eyes akin to cheating in cards

Phil Curry a complete class act with regard to this. On a different level from anybody else I have ever come across.

didnt say he wasnt but give some pictures and interview to one of the tabloids regards betting in running, bigging himself up as one of the best racereaders in the buisness which gave him the edge, never mentioned the fast pictures, wonder how his race reading skills are doing now that most people betting in running also have access to fast pics,

question, what would you rather lose your info from doing course commentaries or your 6 sec fast pic advantage, Happy

Hi 1st time poster. Sat next to him doing the in running for about 5 years and obviously quick pics help . In his case though if he felt things were right he would bet at various stages during the race sometimes from the off.
