Colin Tizzard plans to have Thistlecrack scanned again on Tuesday following the injury setback that has curtailed his season.
So dominant in the staying hurdle division last term, the nine-year-old has translated that form to fences, winning the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day.
He was beaten by the ill-fated Many Clouds in the Cotswold Chase at Cheltenham, but remained at the head of the Gold Cup betting until suffering a torn tendon.
Tizzard said: "After 36 hours of feeling gutted, I thought 'We'd better move on from this'. It won't be the last one, but we found it early and that's the main thing.
"We are going to scan him again on Tuesday. There was a little tear there, but there is no heat or swelling there now.
"We just want to check again, just to please ourselves really. It is not like he is walking around with his leg in a bandage."
Betfair Exchange report that having been matched at odds of 990.0 following news of his setback, Thistlecrack was trading at 10.0 (9/1) on Sunday evening.
He had been favourite prior to the news and was in fact odds-on between winning the King George and suffering defeat at Cheltenham in January.

I bet it at 500 to free up liabilities on it, would be amazed if they ran it now though with it being so close to the race especially if it has missed work etc?

Books have no prices because it was taken out of the market. When Tizzard was asked about it the day after, all he basically said was what the vet told him, he couldn't really say a lot more than what he did (imo).

If the first statement of a slight tendon tear is true and is not a misdiagnosis then Thistlecrack will be at home Gold cup day ...they can scan him everyday between now and March 17th it wont make a jot of difference.

Yeah this isn't a Kicking King or Binocular situation where there was nothing structurally wrong with them. Horses shouldn't be recovering from tendon issues this quick, if he runs someone has some explaining to do.

If you're going to say the gold cup favourite is out make sure you have your story straight, spyker. The Guardian story says there was heat. If it had heat it would be madness to run in the Gold Cup imo. Lay lay lay. 7/2 place if anyone wants it?

My view is Tizzard is just saying we will scan again on Tuesday to check on progress of the tear... Not to determine if he can run or not. I would say Thislecrack hasn't even had a saddle on him since.

Think I agree with you KK..although this bit needs expanding on

I wish we had some better journalists covering our sport.

Even if its a slight tear/strain of a tendon Thistlecrack will 100% not run. dambuster= if that were true theres no need for another scan and he would be 6/4 again!

Thistlecrack was found to have some heat in a leg on Monday night and Tizzard’s vet confirmed a small tear to a tendon after taking a scan on Tuesday morning. The trainer sounded confident of the nine-year-old recovering in time to race next season but added: “It won’t be ’til Christmas, will it? It’s not as if he’s broken down; it’s just a little tear. But I suppose it’s like being a little bit pregnant.
Unequivocal imo. Is he going to say now there was no heat and the scan was wrong ffs

but as to the general public the horse was out one would assume the markets have moved with money from the yard, not on a newspaper report
Funny thing is I always assume the complete opposite! A few people hear a rumour, stick a couple of quid on at big prices and as more people read the emerging story they put 2+2 together and come up with 17 and the price crumbles. As has been said if the injury is anything like described there is zero chance - even forgetting the missed work and probably changed feed schedule and poss drug use etc - if it does then there should be a very in depth enquiry into the Tizzards!

someone from tizzards must be reading social media - just clear it up ffs. How hard can it be. After all you're always telling us how important the punters are

Thefear- answer is no to the drugs question. The only way Thistlecrack runs is if it is not actually a tendon issue, but how they can now say that would be astonishing really! Scan shows a tear then its a tear no ifs or buts!

The intrepid Zoey determined Thistlecrack was scanned with a mobile scanner in the yard on Tuesday. I think it was Tuesday?
Maybe they're just going to scan him with a different piece of kit. I know very little about these things as you can tell!
I think the advantage with the mobile scanner though is that you can download the Betfair Exchange app onto it.

Maybe all the heat has gone away and he looks perfectly sound being walked/trotted up by hand ( no rider on his back) So MAYBE they are doubting a mobile scanner and want a second one just to make sure! Either way he would still be on the easy list this last week because they would still be going on the first scan.

they said they'd not done much with him since the Cotswold Chase because he ran up light and gave a little cough. Heat probably manifested itself when they started to increase his work level early last week.
So does n't sound like he's done too much for the best part of a month.
I don't see him running in the Gold Cup.

To me all Tizzard is saying is they are doing another scan, I cannot see where they are saying it may be ok and plan to run in a Gold Cup in less than 3 weeks unless I have missed something. I would want a double figure price for him to just turn up let alone win it.

The 10-year-old, who came to chasing late, was found to have some heat and swelling in his off-fore on Monday night and a scan on Tuesday morning revealed a small tear in his off-fore tendon. “There’s no two ways about it,” said his disappointed trainer Colin Tizzard. “The vet was in on Tuesday I asked him to scan it. It showed a small tear.
“It’s not a breakdown and hopefully we’ve caught it before any proper damage was done. But it means he’s out for the season. All being well he will be fine for next season.”

"The vets have said the horse should be back next season and the good thing is it did not happen in a race, which can always make things worse."
Tom O'Keeffe, of Rossdales Veterinary Surgeons in Newmarket, explains tendon injuries and their effects.
Tendon injuries in racehorses refer to injuries to the main load-bearing tendon in the horse's forelimb. The tendon's elasticity acts as shock-absorbing and energy-storing when galloping.
Lesions typically occur in the lower leg. The repair tissue that replaces the torn fibres of a strained tendon has poorer elastic strength and capacity for repetitive loading under high strength than undamaged tendon.
Successful return to injury-free training and racing following a tendon strain/tear is determined by the extent of the overall injury as well as how closely the properties of the recovered tendon mirror those of "normal" tendon.
A mild tendon injury is classified as 0-15 per cent of the tendon volume being affected.
Tissue slow to heal
Tendon tissue is slow to heal and most horses with a significant tendon injury should not return to fast work or racing for 9-12 months following injury.
A return to fast work or racing is possible for most mild to moderate tendon injuries. Unfortunately the re-injury rate is high with approximately 50 per cent of horses completing three starts after injury not looking good Sad

Tizzard said after the scan,a small tear in his off fore tendon,it means he is out for the season.ALL BEING WELL HE WILL BE FINE FOR NEXT SEASON. I week after scan can they really be thinking of running, only way that could happen surely is if they looked at the scan and came up with the wrong prognosis, which i think is unlikeley. These horses get better looked after than us these days

Thistlecrack will have his tendon injury scanned again on Tuesday to assess the extent of the damage which forced Colin Tizzard’s chaser to miss the Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup.
The trainer said on Sunday there was no heat or swelling in the leg, with a comeback still programmed for next season.

If he just has a slight black showing on a scan he could run. We had one showing just a nick and the vet said just avoid any ground that does not have some soft in the going description. The chances are with this horse that the risk would not be taken even if the second scan reveals anything purely on the fact that it is a minor injury on a hugely talented horse. He wont run.

personally think if it comes up heavy they will crack on and run ,bandage up ,but that is not what was said ,CT said a tear and they had to stop and wait till next season .Then its all change ,but maybe he knows he may never get the horse back to where it is and its now or never

It all boils down to the original statement being correct. If its a tear he doesn't run regardless of the ground, his age etc etc. I would imagine the Tizzards were absolutely sure it was a tear before going public with it. Also they will probably win the Gold Cup anyway so everything pointing to a non runner.

think joe said it was going to be in it's box before the latest statement of a second scan. I also read Scu saying how devastated they both were when Tizzard phoned him with the news.

I think punters are still nibbling away simply because the Tizzards have not nipped the rumours in the bud. Maybe young Joe has a few mates laying a non runner???

Cannot see him turn up for Cheltenham at all, even if the scan reveals nothing major. There must have been some kind of injury which may need a week or 2 to fully heal.
Surely the festival comes too quick to get him race fit as presumably he has done zero work. Cannot race just 75% and expect to win a gold cup with that uphill finish.
Possibly another scan to see if he could be fit for maybe Aintree or Punchestown?

Its either a) a load of bollax and nothing wrong in 1st palce just a scam and he will run or b) if there was a tear he will not run even if scan looks better this time up how can you justify running with the chance horse will breakdown for good?????

Colin Tizzard has reiterated that Thistlecrack will not run in the Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup.
The King George VI Chase winner was ruled out of the Cheltenham Festival last week with a torn tendon, but mention at the weekend of a second scan set for this week led to some speculation and his price collapsing on the betting exchanges on Sunday night.
However, Tizzard never mooted the possibility of him running in the blue riband, with a second scan on a tendon injury being common practice among trainers to assess the full extent of the damage once an injured leg has had chance to settle down.
In a statement issued to Press Association Sport on Tuesday afternoon, Tizzard said: "Thistlecrack's second scan came back exactly the same as the first, as we expected it would.
"As communicated previously Thistlecrack will not run again this season and all being well we'd expect him to be back at Christmas."
