Report ged February 7, 2017 8:30 PM GMT
Here's a picture of Peter Cazalet in his cadet's uniform when he was about 15....

http://guardsmagazine.com/features_winter15_07Cazelet.html

...and here's a quote from Harry Whiteman, re the latter stages of the 1936 Grand National. Whiteman held the licence for the Cazalet horses at Fairlawne before WW2. In the 1960s, he (Whiteman) trained at Cree Lodge, from where Nigel Angus trained Roman Warrior, and where Linda Perratt trained for a long time....

(it relates mainly to the infamous incident with Davy Jones, and his amateur rider Anthony Mildmay, in whose joint (with Cazalet) honour, the Sandown staying chase was run for many years)

"I was on the Aintree stands and thought everything was going so well, with my two runners, Emancipator, ridden by Mr Cazalet, and Davy Jones, ridden by Mr Anthony Mildmay. Emancipator was travelling well in fourth place, three fences from home, when he fell. But I still had Davy Jones standing and going so nicely that I really thought myself certain to achieve the big ambition of every trainer of steeplechasers and win the Grand National. He took the third fence from home, and for me he was travelling better than his only serious opponent, Reynoldstown, who was carrying 12st 2lb and was conceding Davy a lot of weight. Davy Jones took the second last perfectly and success looked certain. But then he swerved to his left and out of the course and Reynoldstown was left with the race at his mercy. Later I found the buckle on his reins had loosened and that broke the rein. So that, try as he would, Mr Mildmay could not steer Davy Jones, who finished amongst the spectators gathered on the far side between the last two fences."

Emancipator would have been wearing the navy blue waistoat over canary yellow.

Report ged February 8, 2017 1:24 PM GMT
blackbarn - yes, well done. The Woodcote was his 2nd win. He won at 1/3 by 5 lengths. Edgar Britt rode him, and was his regular jockey as a 2yo, but Charlie Smirke was the retained jockey the following year with Sam Armstrong having moved down from Middleham to Newmarket.
Report ged February 8, 2017 1:36 PM GMT
Lerins's rival for top 2yo rating was The Cobbler, who won the Coventry and Middle Park. They finished 1-2 in the 2000gns. (in those days, 6f 2yo form seemed to hold up much better in the 2000gns). As 4yos, My Babu won the Victoria Cup (at Hurst Park), and The Cobbler (beaten in the Victoria Cup) won the Wokingham. Times change.

Report ged February 8, 2017 4:40 PM GMT
blackbarn - yes. Won the Irish Champion Hurdle in 1962. Trained by Tom Taaffe (Pat's father). Ran 3rd at Baldoyle and 2nd at Fairyhouse in April 1962 in 2m hcap hurdles, ridden by Tos (Pat's brother) and Pat, resp. Arkle was down the field both times carrying light weights. Rainlough had 11-10 and 12-0. In the first race, 10yo Fortria was also down the field carrying 12-7 - this was a month after he almost won the Gold Cup (having previously won 2 Champion Chases). In the 2nd race, other beaten horses were 13yo Quita Que (another Cheltenham regular), and 5yo Ferry Boat, who would be runner-up to Arkle in the 1964 Hennessy.

These would be the last races Arkle would lose until Mill House defeated him in the 1963 Hennessy. He won 2 hcap hurdles in Oct 1962 at Dundalk and Gowran, and then came over to England for the first time for the Honeybourne Chase over 2m4f at Cheltenham in November, opening the card on Mackeson Saturday, going off 11/8 fav and winning by 20 lengths on his chase debut. Fortria won his 2nd Mackeson under 12-0.
Report blackbarn February 8, 2017 5:36 PM GMT
ged - He won that Honeybourne Chase by 20 lengths from Billy Bumps ridden by Bobby Beasley(Grin).  The Times reported "Arkle, ridden quietly and with exquisite care by P Taafe, is a promising type. He won more easily that even the verdict of twenty lengths shows". They were not wrong.

You mentioned Fortria, he carried top weight to win the Mackeson later that same day.

The great Michael O'Riordan...

I did all the work with the horses myself and rode them all and it was hard to get better than Jack Of Trumps as the best I had down here. For his short career, he was ante post favourite for the Gold Cup and was able to win a Cesarewitch but the very best horse I ever rode was Golden Cygnet.
He was known as the hairy donkey because nobody could ride him. He was one of the best horses I ever even saw, never mind say I rode. I just backed him and got him going, got him manageable, that was all but he was a remarkable horse. He never got a slap of a stick to win a race and if he had got one, he wouldn't have won!
I did a lot for Edward O’Grady over the years. He had an oul horse one time called Don Mobile. Con Collins trained him first and he ran first time out in the Phoenix Park, Lester Piggott rode him and there was a big gamble on him and he finished second, got beat a head.
Edward bought him later off Con Collins and I think he ran 16 times and he couldn't get into a bracket. In the end they couldn't ride him out as he wouldn't go down the road or whatever so he came to me for four or five months. He won eight races I think, four of them were from Friday to the next Friday. He won at Kilbeggan and won three the following week at the festival meeting in Tramore.
They were all grand horses to handle in a sense because when they came in the gate here they had absolutely no value. Whatever pressure was here you made it yourself, but these horses weren't coming in with a colossal value, they were scrap you could say, and they could only improve you couldn't make them worse!
There’s luck and luck too isn’t there? I was lucky to get them horses and every morning you pull out the legs you call on luck to get you through the day.
My kind of work wouldn't be needed or appreciated today because it’s a different scene altogether. All the trainers have all-weather tracks and they do their work inside on them and if they don’t do it there they don’t run and that’s it.
Report Northofperth February 11, 2017 11:32 AM GMT
Yes G-G , Book of Gold was the horse that I was thinking of .
Talking of Tramore , I thought it very unusual when I attended there , you can't see the racing action around 2/3 furlongs from the winning post , because of the hill they have to climb on the home straight . I thought it was quaint and possibly unique . That was until I attended Carlisle racecourse .
Report punchestown February 11, 2017 12:16 PM GMT
