Leicester bookmaker Raymond Winterton died today following heart attack. He operated as racing raymond in Tatts for the 5o years around the country and was one of the last big characters left on the racecourse. He was also a keen snooker follower

Oh dear,great character,had a few nights in the Prince of Wales in Southport national week many moons ago with him regaling us with his Willie Thorne tales etc.
First remember him one day at Donny when working for LRS,Leslie had just priced up the last race when from nowhere Raymond bellowed out 5 & half for 4 Les,Leslie repeated the bet to the clerk adding "I don't fancy this!" meaning getting paid if it got beat,anyhow the horse duly won and Raymond was first in the queue! RIP. |

remember bringing Raymond back to Leicester services from brighton racecourse in the day. the only time of the journey I got a word in was when he ordered his minions to collect him from there.

One of the last real characters , many entertaining stories, my fav, short of staff he asked Mel attreed to clerk Mez Mez they bet 6/4 5/2 10 bar, he asked for call over just at off, Mel said the fav wins 300 2nd in wins 200 the rest do 5k dangles replied good book

raymond was totally hilarious, was with raymond at royal ascot in the silver a couple of years ago, something like 4/5 favs and couple of 2nd ins won, naturally we won on every race
 the only thing he liked more than a bar one was a bar two.was out hove dogs one night and he had bottle of holster pilsner after every race, he was in brilliant form and had our little crowd in fits of laughter all night. |

Raymond,the greatest story teller ever,brill company and a very good form man.
He would go to usa to see his sister for 5-6 weeks in the winter,about 20 years ago he rang me to nip round his place becorse he wanted fish and chips before he went. i did as he asked thinking f--- me i am skint he is of to cali for six weeks and its cost me . After he finished his supper he said he had been told i was potless,he reached behind his cushion and slung me a package with 2 grand in. all he said was give it me back when it will not leave you potless.A side of dangles not many would have thought he had. R..I..P |

Not sure but i think around 80,he lived in the same house that he was born in,never drove but went every track he wanted,used to buy a car now and again if he had a regular workman that could drive.Not sure about the tax.

RIP Dangles. I was working in the Warwick Silver ring about 25 years ago and the books got a result. Dangles asked to see the book. I don't know how much he lost on it but without a word he picked up the clerking book (one of the extra large point to point books) and he skimmed it like a frisbee across the ring. It must have gone 50 feet before landing. Was so funny.

Ive worked with Raymond for the past 15+ years, when I started many people warned me off Raymond said he would be a B*** to work for - fortunately I never listened and off I went to the Ebor to work for him. I could sit here all night and tell you stories of what he got up to and things he told me, but I wouldnt know where to start.. we all have our own recollections and options of Raymond. To me he was brilliant he treated me like a daughter and i'm absolutely heartbroken. I spoke to him before setting off for Kempton on Boxing day and he said he was feeling better and told me to go and win a few quid... I never made it to Kempton before getting the news RIP Raymond 1 in a million xx

The funeral service for Raymond "Jangles" Winterton will be on 17th January at Gilrose Cemetery then after at Nottingham Odd Fellows Club in Leicester. Family Flowers only donations if desired to Age UK or the Injured Jockey's Fund.
