The Stewards held an enquiry following a report from the Clerk of the Scales that Graham Gibbons, the rider of BUTTON UP (IRE), had substituted the urine sample that he was required to produce with that of another rider, Callum Shepherd. Having heard evidence from the Sampling Officer, GRAHAM Gibbons, CALLUM SHEPHERD, Paul Struthers, the Chief Executive of the PJA who accompanied Shepherd, and a valet, they forwarded a report to the Head Office of the British Horseracing Authority for further consideration.

Yes you are right Fear - it's not like the good old days when jocks were legless by midday is it? Why stop with banning them from their profession -  anybody that has said they have a substance problem (or events show they have) should obv be banned from leaving their houses ffs.

Ffs years ago a blind eye was turned when people very drunk drove cars, we have moved on, Graham should not be let sit on a horse until he has a handle on the drink, for his own sake and other jocks. The Bha should step in and revoke his licence.

Strange you should mention that TheFear, cuz I was only just thinking that we had an incident that left a jockey with life-changing injuries, yet all there has apparently been is a relatively short stewards enquiry on the day.

One might have thought given the seriousness of the incident, the BHA would have announced a full and thorough review of the incident, if only to see if anything could be done that may prevent such a tragic accident occurring again eg rail alignment.

Possibly, TF, though maybe there has been in private as a requirement of Health and Safety procedures, as presumably would apply to any form of employment?

It might prove costly if anything/one was found to be at fault.

Spot on George whole affair swept under the carpet by the leading authority BHA.

Graham Gibbons has voluntarily stood himself down with "immediate, indefinite effect" after the Kempton stewards reported the jockey to have swapped a urine sample with that of another rider on Wednesday evening.

Gibbons had one ride on the card and was asked to provide the sample after finishing sixth on Button Up in the second division of a one-mile maiden event.

However, the stewards reported Gibbons had substituted his sample with that of Callum Shepherd, who also had one ride at the meeting.

They referred the matter to the British Horseracing Authority, who have launched an investigation.

Paul Struthers, chief executive of the Professional Jockeys Association, who was present at Kempton, issued the following statement:

"Callum made a serious error of judgement but to his credit very quickly took steps to correct that error, which ultimately led to the resulting stewards' inquiry into the matter, to which he gave candid evidence.

"The PJA can also confirm that Graham Gibbons has voluntarily stood himself down with immediate, indefinite effect.

"The PJA is in touch with both jockeys and will provide all necessary support. They have been assigned legal representation and will co-operate fully with the investigation."

Robin Mounsey, spokesman for the BHA, said: "The BHA cannot comment further regarding the incident at present as it is now an ongoing investigation.

"However, this is clearly an issue that we are taking very seriously and we will be taking the necessary steps to progress this matter."

Mounsey added: "The BHA can confirm that it has been contacted by the PJA on behalf of Graham Gibbons indicating that he will relinquish his jockeys' licence with immediate effect."

Here's the Guardian's reporting of it, saying had Gibbons not decided to stand down, it seems likely the BHA would have suspended his jockey’s licence pending a hearing.

According to the RP report, the BHA confirmed on Thursday morning that Gibbons had subsequently given another urine sample which will be sent away for testing ahead of any inquiry.

Will get 6 months for positive beak test plus at least 6 months deception on top. Shame as he is is one of strongest jocks in north and planned to have him aboard plenty of mine next summer.

I think the bigger story is the getting an apprentice to swap. I have heard a few stories about some of the senior riders and bullying how true it is I do not know. Though if true they make Best look like a saint.

It seemed pretty well known this guy has a problem so imo he should have been under targeted testing anyway. And was he really "randomly" selected?

Also, htf can someone swap a sample in this day and age? The testers should have been standing next to him when he produced it,,,

Whatever his issues, to have any form of substance in his body when riding these magnificent creatures is a shame. Its so irresponsible I hope others will learn from this.

i feel for graham myself as he imo has always been top draw in the saddle... he has clearly always loved a drink like a massive amount of the population, me being one of them, however i don't consider myself an alcoholic i just love a drink... i hope for his sake the white stuff hasn't got him, however i disagree that makes him an addict or he was on it whilst riding, he may have had a sociable dabble when he wasn't riding the next day, this would still of stayed in his system, so disagree with the stance of he's an addict...of course on here he has already been hung drawn and quartered and needs urgent help

Ive known plenty of alcoholics (related to many) and by fck they ghosted about the place pretending they didnt drink..hiding a stash.. going about different parts of town to drink...

Balls to it.. get tore in if you can handle it and know your limits... be honest with yourself and that will help you find them.

Gibbo has clearly got problems with the bottle, he deserves 6 months ban and time to reflect.

Let's be honest, if he got 30 years, nobody would miss him. Basically he's a low life journeyman midget who bullied some other younger midget to give him his Pisss.
I won't miss him for a second , it's only a pity that they don't get rid of most of the rest of the vermin that ride horses on the AW .

From what was said on the Morning Line, it would seem that this only came to light because CS went to see his valet.

This raises serious questions about the BHA's testing procedures imo, cuz it would seem that the controls are not in place to ensure that the sample given is without question from the selected jockey.

And this raises the question, how many times in the past has this happened?

unbelievable fuss here in the real world failing a drink drugs test at work is instant dismisal,100,s of jocks out there cant get rides why suffer those who cheat and break the rules,take his lic ence away end of.the bloke driving that tram whilst on his phone will probably do 10 years in jail,if a jockey in the freddie incident had been tested and failed a test would the police be brought in,no chance

Why is it ?

Trident is correct. Anything that's going to impair your judgement whilst in charge of a racehorse is utterly irresponsible.
Same as driving a car.

Jockeys in Australia and South Africa have taken legal action against a jockey they considered to be responsible for their injuries. I don't think that it has been tried here but no doubt it is being considered.

Looking at some of his rides in the past it's not the first time that Gibbons has taken the piss
