Looks obvious that Nicholls has lost all faith in STD. Using Schofield and claimers rather than using the so called number one stable jockey.

Amazingly STD even partnered a Henderson favourite in a big hurdle race yesterday.

I personally quite like STD. He isn't a great jockey but may become so in time but Nicholls has clearly become impatient and I expect Fehilly will become Nicholls stable jockey.

I get the impression (just a strong feeling) that STD is turning out to be a difficult guy to deal with and maybe (I hope not) could become quite arrogant in the years to come which will mean that trainers might not want to deal with him. It's just a feeling I get from his interviews. Maybe it's just a false impression. We shall see.

Maybe he's like the Premier league players got more money in the bank than he know's what to do with and work is just a pass time....

nothing wrong with bowen but nicholls definitely has soft spot for cobden

Sam & Sean still young and both have good futures, cant see nicholls changing unless he can get a top irish jock but they all seem to have jobs at the moment.
Report guinness2dear December 4, 2016 9:41 PM GMT
I remember Nicholls having a soft spot for Joe Tizzard. In fact all of his spot spots are for inadequate jocks; including Cobden. Maybe it's a throwback to his own inadequacies as a jock..

Nicholls needs to keep him. We couldn't possibly put up with him on ITV Racing every week.

All of the jockeys have good and bad spells. If you looked at the last 14 days you would put Johnson and Hughes well clear of the pack but how much of that is superior ability and how much is down to very good agents and smaller trainers snapping up those riders for their fancied runners? Stable jocks will always have poor runs when their main employer has a lean time. Heskin, bowen, Cobden, Skelton all very capable imo but so are some of the "veterans" like Scudamore and Aspell. STD, Coleman and any of those named above would be champion jockey given the same book of rides as Johnson. As for STD, no jockey in history can be at their very best for at least a week after an injury lay off so make allowances for what he does until next weekend.

Lots of nonsense on here as usual. STD is perhaps one of the least arrogant people I have ever heard speaking on the Morning Line. He is the epitome of humility. As a jock, well, he is coming back from injury so give him a chance. Joe Tizzard inadequate? Are you for real?? Inadequate jocks do not win shedloads of grade ones, including several at the festival. The actual issue is that Nicholls doesn't show a great deal of patience with his jocks...as exemplified by Joe, Timmy, Christian, Liam, Sam, etc., etc.
Report Arklearkle December 5, 2016 4:40 PM GMT
Nichols blamed Sam Thomas for his ride on Big Buck's loss in the Hennessy yet never ran him in a chase again which says plenty.
Report sageform December 5, 2016 4:42 PM GMT
Harry Skelton was another casualty of the Nicholls policy.
Report salmon spray December 5, 2016 6:34 PM GMT
And Daryl. And Noel.
Ruby the only one who sacked him. And he IS an arrogant git.
Report neill d December 5, 2016 6:48 PM GMT
Sam seems a lovely young fella, he just isn't much better than your average jockey. Nicholls should be begging Townend or Russell to take over, the latter is available except for a small arrangement with Dai Walters. It is nearly negligent that neither Nicholls nor Henderson are using him, he is one of the few guys Ruby can't intimidate.

The whole field were afraid of their life of him during the Tingle Creek. Ar Mad, what that might do with a jockey that has a chance of settling it, made for Russell. I don't mind Jamie Moore, he's good, but i don't think he ever thought he would beat Ruby, not really; a guy like Russell expects to win; he'd nearly have put Walsh through the rail after the last!
Report Roselier December 5, 2016 7:39 PM GMT
I rate Josh a lot higher than Jamie. Jamie is no different to STD inasmuch that he constantly looks unbalanced in the saddle. Far to fidgety in a finish, everything flailing. He nearly lost that Scottish National as a result of trying to do too much.
Report neill d December 5, 2016 10:32 PM GMT
I didn't think much of the ride on Ar Mad, I know the horse is free and doesn't help himself but it looked suicidal what they were doing.

I'd compare it to what Ruby did on Hurricane Fly when he won the champion hurdle in 2011, horse pulled like mad, but Walsh managed to save just enough. Now you'll hear about not disappointing horses, but winning going that gallop was impossible, at least if he'd held him, there was some conceivable chance of winning, or could he hold him?
Report dan hardcore December 5, 2016 10:47 PM GMT
The gallop Ar Mad set was fine, he'd have won if he'd jumped better.
Report neill d December 5, 2016 10:49 PM GMT
Thought he was too free and did too much myself! Agree to differ, Dan

Thought Ruby lookeed too happy to take the lead for him to be going a beneficial pace to his chances.
Report differentdrum December 6, 2016 8:24 AM GMT
Yes, Ar Mad would have gone very close to winning without the mistakes. On that basis it seems bonkers that Moore is suddenly thinking of sending him another mile.
Report harry callaghan December 6, 2016 8:53 AM GMT
i think ar mad is gagging for a step up in trip, whether he'll get another mile we don't know yet, this could be a proper horse...lets hope he comes forward for the run and doesn't bounce

Couldn't agree more. Apart from jockeys retained by their owners Henderson hasn't had a decent jockey for 28 years. He is faithful to the moderates like Tinkler, Bass and McGrath and tolerated the likes of Kavanagh, Foley and Fitzgerald (Supposed to be a great jockey but only averaged 50 winners a year) far too long. He is finally using jocks like Johnson, Moloney, Russell, STD etc. Hope he chooses one of those guys. Must be enormously dispiriting for the staff to have jockeys which are effectively a 10 pound penalty on the stable's horses.

Certainly the training regime needs sorting out too. Far too many animals not getting home and clearly unfit. Can't have had a virus for 3 seasons or can he?

Report sageform December 10, 2016 5:28 PM GMT
Henderson had a disaster season and any horses that  were there have never really recovered. On the other hand the younger ones are looking very good and once Nicko de Boinville gets back, they should have plenty of winners. Noel Fehily has ridden quite a few. Will he be given the stable job?
Report GANT007 December 10, 2016 5:32 PM GMT
There is no stable jockey vacancy at Seven Barrows.....owners have their own riders.
