Laugh

it has been said that anyone who came up with 40 should apply for asda
Report oneyallbeenwaiting4 • September 3, 2016 3:49 PM BST
the logic to get 40 also works to get 96 if you continue the sequence adding in the missing numbers up to 8 + 11

thats why 96 is accepted as corrected
Report ProSniper • September 3, 2016 3:58 PM BST

52 an acceptable answer imo.
Report Mikael D'Haguenet • September 3, 2016 8:33 PM BST
In fact could make a case for 52 over 96.
Report timbuctooth • September 4, 2016 5:10 AM BST
40 is clearly wrong, as there`s no explanation for the first line;

1 + 4 = 5       ????????????
2 + 5 = 12     add 5+2 + 5 = 12
3 + 6 = 21     add 3+6 + 12 = 21
8 + 11 = ?

96 follows every stage of the progression, and is correct.

Report Greg_Gory • September 4, 2016 9:43 AM BST
or maybe blah fookin blah = blah blah Laugh
Report Mikael D'Haguenet • September 4, 2016 10:36 AM BST
Tim explains it well.

The reason for 52 being nearly right is

1 + (1×4) = 5
2 + (2×5) = 12
3 + (3×6) = 21
8 + (4×11) = 52

96 is clearly more correct!
Report s.kenbo • September 4, 2016 10:53 AM BST
1 + 4 = 5
2 + 5 = 12
3 + 6 = 21
4 + 7 = 32
5 + 8 = 45
6 + 9 = 60
7 + 10 = 77
8 + 11 = 96
9 + 12 = 117
10 + 13 = 140

That would be it completed from one to ten.
Report chavman • September 4, 2016 11:04 AM BST
you any good with the Ax-Kochen theorem kenbo.i presume you applied it here
Report Greg_Gory • September 4, 2016 11:05 AM BST
0 + 3 = 3
1 + 4 = 8
2 + 5 = 15
3 + 6 = 24
4 + 7 = 35
5 + 8 = 48
6 + 9 = 63
7 + 10 = 80
8 + 11 = 99
9 + 12 = 120
10 + 13 = 143

Answer is 99  Laugh

96 solves the 'problem' in the code of a single line without need of further information, other than to validate the code on each other line.
40 requires the rest of the information, which given more information may not continue to be true.
In other words, 96 works out the answer given one line whereas 40 remains in the dark.
