the logic to get 40 also works to get 96 if you continue the sequence adding in the missing numbers up to 8 + 11

thats why 96 is accepted as corrected

In fact could make a case for 52 over 96.

40 is clearly wrong, as there`s no explanation for the first line;

1 + 4 = 5       ????????????
2 + 5 = 12     add 5+2 + 5 = 12
3 + 6 = 21     add 3+6 + 12 = 21
8 + 11 = ? 

96 follows every stage of the progression, and is correct.

The reason for 52 being nearly right is

1 + (1×4) = 5
2 + (2×5) = 12
3 + (3×6) = 21
8 + (4×11) = 52

96 is clearly more correct!

96 solves the 'problem' in the code of a single line without need of further information, other than to validate the code on each other line.
40 requires the rest of the information, which given more information may not continue to be true.
In other words, 96 works out the answer given one line whereas 40 remains in the dark.
