Hardly surprising horse race betting has declined substantially when bookmakers give less and less encouragement to punters to bet on it. Banks needs to wake up and smell the coffee but he is a bookmaker after all.

Horse racing attendances have never been bigger,how can you say its in decline.Horse race betting on course is in decline and what does your lot sportsadvisor do about attracting the punters to your joints, offer them Yorkshire ew terms and fractional odds which none of the next generation of punters use or understand.

Having read this thread several times,it appears that bookmakers are not flavour of the month/year,or anytime.Like everyone else on here,apart from bookmakers,I too am a punter of longstanding,and think there is another way of looking at the situation.
  The bad points are continually highlighted,but life has changed drastically over the last couple of decades,and there are many good points,that are presumably taken for granted.(Best odds,bonuses,money back etc.)
    High Street traders(non betting) have increased their markups hugely due to rent increase and business rates increases,giving the public much poorer value.Quality of goods appears to be a thing of the past,unless you are prepared to pay big bucks.
  Of course we all want a good deal,who doesn't,but as said above,life has changed.
If the new generation of punters want to play machines,footie,and other things apart from horseracing,then turnover has to drop,so restrictions become more necessary,and for what it is worth,restrictions aren't a new phenomenon.
   Geoff isn't an idiot,and no,I am not a relation,or close friend,and only know him from the racecourse,but when he states facts that people strongly disagree with,then personal abuse  appears to follow,which is unfair.The whole scenario has greatly changed,and whether we like it,or not,we have to accept that things are what they are.Bookmakers betting unfairly oncourse I will never agree with,and they should be avoided,however Geoff doesn't come into that group.

stewarty b, your point - and several other facts - blow the lie bookmakers are wont to spew out clearly out of the water.  It is simply mendacious to treat football and racing as though they are like-for-like, as Mr Banks would like us to believe, in order to make his rather vacuous and bankrupt point.  The clear and irrefutable fact is a cabal of bookmakers - and it would seem Mr Banks is clearly in this camp - DO NOT consider it appropriate or necessary to pay a "FAIR PRICE" for a product they generate huge sums of revenue and profits from and would rather deflect from the point at the heart of the issue, by making spurious and baseless claims. 
In the warped minds of the bookmaker, they would sooner walk into Waitrose or Sainsbury's, pick up a loaf of bread and not have to pay for it, or tell the supermarket what they are willing to pay for it - but would nevertheless would like to have a slice of bread for breakfast. 

The sooner legislation is passed to rectify this anomaly the better - and it is coming, whether bookmakers like it or not.

Evidently, the "thought police" object to opinions that differ from their own or might sail somewhere close to the uncomfortable truth, as I see my initial post has been deleted.

Pablo-fanque, horseracing could have offered it's own betting product/shops if the government a few years ago hadn't made the grave error of being hood-winked into selling the Tote to BetFred.  There was a perfectly viable alternative which was put forward from within racing.

this is quite the most ridiculous statement ive ever seen posted here...and im surprised by the contributor who posted it..in fact i wouldnt be surprised if it was a hoax given its stupidity?

so many of my friends who were regular  punters  have given up because of restrictions.in fact ive not bothered with"recreational betting" in a while.if i dont get the call or text i wont bet.

restrictions are the main  big reason why racing is in decline...end of story..

I agree with posts about restrictions. Why most people got into racing was the ability of the sport as an intellectual challenge. You could actually study form, use experience etc... what the bookmakers did in the last 4-6 years particularly is say this reason for entering the game is not allowed (regardless of whether you won and the fact we have over rounds in your favour etc..) You almost couldn't or cant fail to fall into their traps that are justifications to shut you down. Take an early price and it moves - GONE - Take a lower price and keep getting paid at BOG - GONE - Take an antepost mover - GONE - Take a market mover - GONE - Beat them on their shittty slow In running odds - GONE - Take a top price - GONE - Use oddschecker betslip - GONE - Use your PC not mobile - GONE - dont take offers (obbviously shrewd) - GONE Take offers  (bonus abuser) - GONE So the issue is most punters fall into one or more of these - and why not? and so most punters get gubbed pretty quickly. Literally the only people left are people who bet £1 -£5 bets or just complete mugs. Complete mugs now cant bet as they have all the Responsible gambling checks on them - so what is left? Nothing really. A sport that will die off soon as a betting proposition.

It must be hard for them these days - they have to pretend that they don't want to fleece degenerate addicts - when in reality the only thing they are interested in, is fleecing degenerate addicts. They have to pretend they take bets, when in reality they just want you to get addicted to fruit machines and roulette.

Nearly all of them - not just the newest names but also some of the great names from the past - are now just a front for on-line casinos, slots and bingo. Bookmaking is dead, they have been reduced to enticing half-wits to try to get 5 leprechauns/rainbows/pots of gold to land in a straight line!

TM - i dont think they care whether its sport or casino as long as you are a degenerate. However you are right their goals are embarrassing with their advertising and when the fun stops etc... whilst at the same time stopping anyone who does responsibly play (by restricting them) and bombarding the rest with casino offers. this is the irony for me that nobody talks about. Everything in their PR is about how they want sustainable responsible gamblers and that is what they are investing in an doing - whilst actually if they have and create responsible gamblers they have no business - so its all BS - yet unfortunately so few of the general public see it and see them for what they are. I honestly hope the tote stages a bit more of a comeback as the online bookmakers no are on borrowed time in uk now. They did it to themselves as well

its hilarious PR imo - playing to governments and regulators who dont have enough info to make up their own minds on who these companies really are.
