He has not ridden for 14 days and has no booked rides this weekend and beyond. Clearly something wrong. I hope it is not depression, loss of confidence.

Paul Midgley and Kevin Ryan will have been told on a need-to-know basis. It would be sad if it is loss of confidence but you can see how it might happen to someone that has won a National and a Gr1 at Royal Ascot. He would not be used to competing at a low level, going to Hamilton, Bath etc for one ride. Virus doesn't make sense. Hop I'm not right but he might be in the same frame of mind that caused him to give up NH. In which case retirement beckons.

I was unaware of any past emotional illness tbh, but the mood swings in a win/lose occupation must be considerable and he's best out of it for now if true.

But - Surely he cannot be depressed because he is not piling up winners NUMERICALLY.
Strewth - he is, and has been, an established jockey for years ... Not like some upcoming younger one seeing their perceived ambition falling away.
His riding may well have suffered because he is, POSSIBLY, depressed about something ELSE.
However - I would find it harder to be depressed if I thought about my, roughly, 10% from Prize-Money Won, over the past 5 years - £5,205,054 -
- Plus what he made previously over the Jumps.
True, and agree - saddo But - Surely he cannot be depressed because he is not piling up winners NUMERICALLY.Strewth - he is, and has been, an established jockey for years ... Not like some upcoming younger one seeing their perceived ambition falling
He rode for me once and he seemed a very bubbly, confident bloke. These types are the ones who can easily slide to a low when confidence is lost. It is a pressure job, a few at the top in other sports suffer, Trott and Trescothick for example.
Depression is a horrible illness, it as troubled me for over 30 years now, it is something you learn to manage, usually along with medication, but when it hits you for the first time it can take a year to get your life back.
Whatever ails him I hope he recovers soon.

He's probably in that in between position of being too light for a jump jockey but too heavy for the Flat, so I would imagine he has to waste to get down to around eight and a half stone and that leaves the immune system a little vulnerable.
I'm sure he wouldn't have missed Royal Ascot without a good reason.
