Mccririck maybe?
Its an old people thing I think, everyone knows they mean on the exchange when they say it so no problem really, unless its your first day watching racing then you will be wondering about this mystical machine |

gets more complicated when terry spargo says they "leave the machine"
|

By:
McCririck started it - as he would not refer to it as the EXCHANGE - because he detested it.
Why? - Because, at the time, he was still giving forth his tic-tac and reporting lumpy bets from, "the Jungle" ... HIS domain, the On-Course Betting Ring - and he, obviously saw the EXCHANGE as a threat to his (previous) EXCLUSIVITY of reporting Betting Markets. |

Wasn't the Tote also called "the machine" at one time as well as "the nanny".
|
|
By:
The Tote was always called the 'Machine'. Cant see what the exchange has got to do with 'machine'.
|
|
By:
The connection was -
McCririck would blurt out his betting information from 'the Ring' - - and then turn to Tanya - who was holding a Laptop - and ask/say - "What are they saying on on the Machine?" ... meaning, obviously, Betfair. |

Cheers, Gerbs, onlooker(I knew the forum wiki would provide some detailed info
) I don't know how long these young 'uns have been saying it but I've definitely began hearing it far more readily than ever before. They've either been directed to say it..or one of the clowns thought they were being "cool" by using it and then the typical trend among the brainless herd naturally ensued... |

I thought it meant the Gordy Elliot hotpot.
No wonder the bookies love me. |

The head in the machine men, everyday on the racecourse there's a head in every joint stuck firmly into the machine, none of them have an opinion all they are interested in is arbing or trading under the exchange prices,no more shouting the odds (just in case they have disappeared on the machine by the time a punter makes it to their joint) or workers flying about the ring hedging their liabilities. Then they moan about Chesterbet,Bangorbet, Riponbet or anyone who are offering crap odds to the punters the same as they used to do when there were no exchanges.

Annie always leaves the machine behind her when they go for a gallop.
