'If you walk in with €100, we want you to walk out with €90' - Paddy Power insists it doesn't want gambling addicts as customers

Paddy Power insists that it is not in the company's interests for people with gambling problems to bet with it.

The son of founder David Power said: "We're not there to take you to the cleaners. If you walk in with €100, we want you to walk out with €90; we don't want you to walk out with zero, because then you don't come back."

However, he added: "The reality is you're an adult, it's your money, you can spend it as you want but there should be the tools there for you to take control of yourself."

Paddy Power was censured by the UK Gaming Commission, which found that the company did not deal with a heavy gambler appropriately.

It was also sanctioned for "serious failings" after it failed to ascertain the source of funds used by a man who, it later transpired, had stolen €319,000 from clients at two banks where he worked.

Mr Power admitted the failings of the company and said lessons had now been learnt. The issue was not an individual staff problem, but a "process and policy issue".

He said: "I think that now, we would be light years ahead of that. The more technology improves as well, the more we can track and monitor and be as responsible as we can be."

Mr Power has also called for an Irish gambling regulator "with teeth" and said the company's failings in the UK highlighted the need for regulation here.
