Re Paul John, he probably wouldn't have been able to anyway, having left his 4th trainer inside a year, having had a warning for breaking the rules by leaving 3. Perhaps they will be kind since the 4th one was Best.

I wonder if AP was called as a character witness by Best. And if not, why not? I would have thought AP saying that he had never been asked to stop one would have been a massive help to Best.

It will be amusing now whenever any commentator comes out with "and so and so is doing his best...."
I do kind of feel a bit for Paul John though if he was a reluctant accomplice (but how would we know?) because if your boss tells you to do something like give a horse an easy ride (assuming that was the case here) then it's not really going to help you if you flatly refuse to or disobey riding orders. Yet if he did either and then brought it to the authorities attention that he had been asked to not ride the horse on its merits, if Jim Best was found not guilty then John would be a pariah in racing circles.
And he still might be anyway, for now being deemed as untrustworthy by trainers and punters alike, with some of those trainers thinking untrustworthy in the way that he can't discretely follow orders.

I agree with halcyon. I also hope somebody will fund John in suing him for defamation in the civil courts. Must have a very strong case as his career in racing is almost certainly over.

It's a shame how the lesser jockeys have to ride the non triers, then hand over the ride to a big name jockey after they've worked to get the horse ready for the win.
When in most cases they're just as capable of riding the horse to victory as the big name is.
''I bet there isn't half a lengths difference between all of them.'' John Francome said that.

One or two twitchy bottoms around today amongst the AW trainers,I dare say. In truth, (tin hat on), I do feel sympathy with smaller trainers, handling mediocre horses within a handicapping system that viciously penalizes any form of success. Should they continually do their best for anonymous punters, (and scupper the horses career)..or "work the system" for the benefit of the owners to whom they owe their livelihood ? Answers on a postcard......

They are all at it (well most of them) and everyone can see it. It certainly isn't just the smaller trainers either as we all well know.
Regarding Best going to the high court if he's found guilty, he would surely have a case due to the incompetency of the BHA and their case against him. I am unsure how the legal side of things work if he went that far but surely it would get thrown out after the BHAs case has gone from the start. Error after error.

There's an appeal process before the High Court becomes a possibility. The problem Best has is that he might well win the case, for the reasons Magic Daps has given, but it could cost him a fortune. Judges don't always award costs to the winner, particularly if they think he is a dodgy character. Not sure how good an actor Jim is.

Surely the High Court cannot just award costs to one winning party and then the next case they won't award the costs because they think he's dodgy - I imagine it is a bit more of a robust system than that Salmon!!
Will be interesting whatever the outcome, if he is found not guilty I think the BHA will just have to let it go. If they waste more money on this then they really should take a good hard look at themselves and a few really should resign - that won't happen though will it.

richgit, some tainers work the system for themselves and a privelged few, bollax to the owners. They think they own the horses in their care and can do as they like with them. Not all trainers of course, but there are some out there for sure.

Don't think so MD. There is no set rule about costs as far as I know. That's why no win no fee firms are pretty careful who they will represent. It's a bit like libel cases where the libelled person gets 1p damages ( and no costs ).

JIM BEST says he will do whatever it takes to clear his name if he is found guilty of ordering jockey Paul John to stop two of his horses in Monday's keenly anticipated verdict in his non-trier inquiry.
The Lewes trainer and his legal team will reassemble at BHA headquarters in High Holborn, London to hear the disciplinary panel's findings in the next phase of the lengthy and controversial case.
The panel will announce its verdict almost a year to the day that John produced the first of two contentious rides on Best-trained runners, on which the BHA based its case against Best.
The trainer has denied all charges and said on Sunday: "If I get the wrong result [on Monday] I will never give up and I will do whatever I need to do. I will go to the High Court."
The panel, chaired by ex-Court of Appeal judge Sir William Gage and also including former amateur jump jockey William Norris QC and Nicholas Wachman, a former senior steward of the Turf Club in Ireland, retired to consider a verdict on November 25 following a five-day rehearing.
The original guilty verdict against Best and four-year disqualification imposed had to be quashed after it emerged the BHA was a client of Matthew Lohn, the solicitor who chaired the first panel.
An appeal board ordered a second hearing because of a perception of bias and the insufficiency of the reasons given to support the verdict by the Lohn-chaired panel.
Best denies three charges, of instructing John to intentionally ensure Echo Brava and Missile Man did not run on their merits in races at Plumpton on December 14 and Towcester on December 17 last year, and of conduct prejudicial to the integrity, proper conduct or good reputation of horseracing.
If found guilty the trainer will have seven days to appeal from the time the panel releases written reasons for the findings, which are expected to be issued today.
If Best is acquitted the BHA would likewise also have an opportunity to appeal.

Barstool.....you are right, and I have been victim to it ! Sparrow......you are right, just seems to be a lot more poor horses and prize money on the bloated AW circuit/circus....hence more opportunities to be creative with the form book. As many others have said on here before, none of us regulars should be remotely surprised by it all ...and punters could perhaps actually benefit from thinking what the trainers might be thinking !...(assuming most trainers do think )

regardless if he is guilty or not, in all walks of life werther it be a disciplinary at work, a murder trial, etc procedures that are in place to protect both parties have to be followed. the BHA have made such a mess of this case i doubt they could ever give a guilty verdict that would not be overturned elsewhere.

Best being found guilty on account of the evidence of Paul John and the unprofessionalism of the BHA is akin to Trump and Brexit outcomes on the same day/night, I firmly believe.
