Report sandysboy March 7, 2016 9:54 AM GMT

Falling circulation?

What should we do?

Obvious

Stick the price up!

How much is it now?
Report Breedingmad March 7, 2016 10:57 AM GMT
£9.50
Report Dr Crippen March 7, 2016 11:02 AM GMT
Thanks Bleedingmad.

That's not too bad.
I'll nip down the newsagent shop and get one today.
Report greenhill March 7, 2016 11:38 AM GMT
If falling circulation is the main reason for the price increase then a possible cause is that from the punters perspective they have lost credibility Re looking out for our interests.?
Report zipper March 7, 2016 12:12 PM GMT
the R/post cost over £700 quid a year  ...   a real good punter and i mean a real good punter can make 10% on turnover  over the year... he needs to BET   £7000  just to pay for the Racing  Post ..................LaughLaughLaughLaugh
Report sandysboy March 7, 2016 12:20 PM GMT
Dont think its anything to do with circulation they regard it as their annual price increase and what better time to do it CHELTENHAM WEEK WHEN THERE IS A GREAT DEMAND FOR IT, they put the prices up that week every year

Pint of lager must be £5 in Millington's local now!
Report kevinglass March 7, 2016 1:43 PM GMT
I buy it very rarely now. They probably only survive on the advertising revenue, and as such can't afford to upset the Bookmakers. Consequently they don't report on the biggest issues, bookmakers restrictions, responsible gambling, FOBT problems, single manning in shops etc.

The North Korea daily probably has about the same amount of editorial freedom.
Report TheCollector March 7, 2016 1:51 PM GMT
I buy it on a Saturday and during festival and that's about it. Absolutely no way would I pay for this paper day in day out to read the likes of Birch, Kealy etc. Just walk into the local bookies and read the free one.

Report porter March 7, 2016 3:42 PM GMT
has it gone up to 2.30 midweek and 2.60 saturday please
Report unbiased March 7, 2016 4:05 PM GMT
R Post weekdays 5x£2.20 ---£11
Weekend         2 x £2.50--£5
Total for week             £16
£16  x 52                £832,less Christmas day
So not £700,but over £800
For my part I have had a standing order for the paper every day,but now I cancel on many days,as nothing worthwhile to read, and dross racing that I won't play on.I assume that many are of like mind.If it goes up again I will probably cancel on more days. The Weekender on Wednesdays although £3 gives all the rest of the weeks entries. Will probably have a price hike too!
It isn't always a question of whether,or not,you can afford something, but whether,or not,it represents value, and most days the R Post does not represent value at all.
Report Ron Pillock March 7, 2016 4:28 PM GMT
I agree about everything having a value.  I value the RP as being 50p a day. Even then I probably only buy it on Saturday.
Report Stow_judge March 7, 2016 4:43 PM GMT
What features do you think are worth paying for? The only thing I think is worth paying for are the individual race reports. I am not really interested in any other part of the publication personally, beyond buying it occasionally for a read. You can access the videos and spotlight comments on other sites.
Report jmdc March 7, 2016 4:55 PM GMT
^ Trouble is you can't. The form is far more comprehensive than online, and when you have four meetings to study it's a godsend.

Why not buy The Weekender as it has full results and individual comments on each horse in the race.
Report unbiased March 7, 2016 5:08 PM GMT
I can't imagine why it is of interest to read what Richard Birch,or any of the rest, won,or lost on.Years ago I asked,as a buyer of the paper daily for years,to publish ALL TIPSTERS P+L alongside their articles and tips.Needless to say it never happened.
I also asked if they would print by the player's name what team they played for when showing the lineups for Internationals. The sports editor agreed that it would be informative, and would see if they could do it.It happened just a couple of times only. Courtois (Chelsea),Benteke (Liverpool)etc.
Obviously the shops are the main buyers and with their wall display broadsheets too,but I would imagine the sales to punters are dropping, except on big days like Ascot,Chelt,York etc.

anyone add up what you bet a year + internet access ATR/RUK Wink
Report bettysboy March 7, 2016 5:51 PM GMT
I buy the paper version everyday because the detail is not matched by the online version or any other source i can find. Also the use of some of the simple data provided cuts out lots of wasted time and searches on other products. For me it is worth the money but I keep looking out for other, cheaper ways of tackling the simple angles I use. I like to bet to try and win and the RP provides useful info to help with this. However as i have a local bookie around the corner, i might just go in there, have a 50p bet on the virtuals or FOBTS, take photos of the relevant RP pages, then go home and complete my online research.
Perhaps i need to change my habits...

Report Ron Pillock March 7, 2016 5:56 PM GMT
I bought it out of habit for years until it dawned on me it took me all of 5 minutes to read it.  Then I thought Hmmmm is this really worth £500 a year?

Same thing with Sky tv.  I had it for years, when I moved I meant to get it installed I never got round to it, thats another £700 a year in me bin!

£1200 a year for things I don't miss adds up.

jmdc - I use only the on line version of the Racing Post - I really would appreciate it if you could tell me how the form is more comprehensive in the paper version - at best, you only get the last three runs of each horse don't you?
Report spyker March 8, 2016 10:01 AM GMT
Me too crep, don't understand the 'more comprehensive' line at all. I don't pay for anything and read all the form i need to (because it's..... err all the form) using rp online, haven't logged in for years as I don't need other people's opinions and i certainly don't need to pay for them!
