he could have been one of the greatest jockeys ever if he just continued doing what he was doing riding winners for jessica harrington and nicky hendersen, but these last 2 years have tarnished his legacy since he take this new job.

Difficult to know who is making more of a fool of themselves, Geraghty or Gary 'plenty of people will be interested in that next time' O'Brien? Ever thought about criticising your chums Gary?

What was Geraghty doing easing down approaching the last? He needed to throw the horse at the last. We have seen it enough when the horse is 'expected'. All we saw in the brief head on before the last was one air shot.

Yesterday, we had Persad talking to McManus as if he was some sort godlike figure. You would have got more useful information interviewing Agnes Haddock.

It is about time this plague were treated with the amount of respect they deserve. None.

We have the gallops later. The day O'Brien tries to hide, either not knowing anything or collecting the useful information for himself.

Beaten favourite Anibale Fly (fourth) is going to be in many a horses to watch list after his effort in the Coral.ie Handicap Hurdle at Leopardstown. Ultimately though it was Solita that brought up a 169/1 double for her jockey Robbie Power.
Not altogether surprisingly Anibale Fly's strong finish in fourth place generated plenty of comment on social media, but up front it was Paul Nolan's Solita that short-headed Lilshane.< Solita was a 16/1 chance for her County Mayo owner/breeder Robert Hennelly (playing in goal for his county against Donegal currently), whilst Power's winner in the first was Jett for Jessica Harrington.

i wonder if the stewards noticed the two pulls he took including the one close home , watch this space but don't hold your breath

You surely don't need to be a jock to know if you rein a horse back who wants to go forward you can easily turn a decent jumper into a bad one.

Strange that we don't get anywhere near the same amount of creeping round the the back when it's a Mullins horse.

I think you will find for the most part AP was not asked to participate in this type of thing, the guy was only interested in winners. Jonjo normally got the stable conditionals / McLernon etc  to set up the McManus handicap jobs.

Apart from Getmeoutofhere at Ascot, and I am not suggesting AP did anything wrong (that the only case I can think where people asked questions), I cannot recall any McCoy non-jiggers. But if you care to list some examples, I stand to be corrected

To be fair there doesn't seem to be any point seeing as you don't see the Getmeoutofhere ride as a non trier.

Fairyhouse stewards get tongues wagging

There was a wonderful showcase of National Hunt racing in Ireland last weekend, but the story that has generated the most chatter amongst Irish racing observers were the actions taken by the stewards at Fairyhouse on Saturday. No less than five running-and-riding enquiries were called, resulting in two bans under the non-triers rule.

The handicapping system that is in use in Ireland and Great Britain is what it is. It all but encourages trainers to run horses in maidens when they are not likely to show their full potential, be it due to lack of full fitness and/or experience, unsuitable conditions or something else. While some take a moralistic attitude towards this, for those trainers that don’t have stakes/Graded class horses, playing the system to one extent or another in an effort to give their horse the best chance of finding a winning opportunity down the line is all but a requirement for those that wish to compete.

Of course, based on a strict reading of the Rules of Racing, the stewards could have all bar a few of the runners in every maiden hurdle/chase in for running and riding enquiries, but that isn’t how it pans out in practice. In general, the stewards only tend to act on occasions where horses are ridden in a manner that blatantly seeks to hide the ability that it seems they would be capable of showing on the day if ridden with more vigour or enterprise.

Such cases of intervention by the stewards are rare. Indeed, just how rare they are will shock many that aren’t familiar with the numbers. In 2014, there were 27,476 runners between Flat and National Hunt racing in Ireland. Amongst all of those, there were only 38 runner-and-riding enquiries resulting in just two subsequent suspensions on the day. Those numbers are indicative of a glaring reluctance from the stewards to police the sport, which is what made the actions of the stewards at Fairyhouse on Saturday all the more newsworthy.

In light of the above statistics, the fact that five running-and-riding enquiries were held at one race meeting was notable in itself. That those five enquiries resulted in two 30-day bans for the Pat Fahy-trained Shantou Ed and for the Tony Martin-trained Bobbie’s Diamond meant that the stewards at Fairyhouse had suspended as many non-triers in one afternoon as had been suspended for non-trying in all of 2014 in Ireland!

As previously mentioned, running and riding enquiries tend to take place after blatant displays that Stevie Wonder could spot from a parish away, but that is another notable aspect of Saturday afternoon that is worth discussing. The three horses were the subject of enquiries in the maiden chase (two of which were subsequently banned) and Uaintseenothingyet in the maiden hurdle were sent off at 40/1, 33/1, 100/1 and 33/1 and were beaten by 80, 89, 96 and 53 lengths respectively. When one watches their performances (the head-on view is required as they are so far behind) one can see why the stewards chose to ask questions based on a strict interpretation of the rules.

However, I would suggest that the majority of regular watchers of maiden hurdles/chases could find multiple similar cases on any given day of Irish National Hunt racing that did not attract such attention, never mind the cases of “eye catchers” at much shorter prices that finish much closer to the leaders and have had no questions asked of their connections. So, for those four performances to result in enquiries that led to two of them being banned is certainly out of line with what has unfortunately become accepted as the norm in Irish racing.

What has perhaps generated the most discussion of all about the cases is that four of the five horses that were the subject of enquiries (one of which was subsequently banned) ran in the colours of leading owner JP McManus. Prior to Saturday, the most recent cases of a McManus horse and their trainer and/or jockey being suspended and/or fined under the non-trier rule were High Tail It at Tipperary last April (subsequently reversed on appeal) and Fahamore at Down Royal in December 2013. In the decades prior to that, such cases against horses owned by McManus were as rare as hen’s teeth. Thus, four horses in the McManus silks attracting the attention of the stewards on a single afternoon certainly raised eyebrows.

So, what does all this mean for the bigger picture? Are the actions of the stewards at Fairyhouse indicative of a change in Irish stewarding, that maiden hurdles and maiden chases will now be policed with much more rigour to protect the integrity of Irish racing? Or was it simply an aberration of one stewarding panel making a stand for how they believe the game should be policed?

While it will take time for the full truth to be revealed, the first test will come if Saturday’s bans are appealed, which one suspects they almost certainly will be. If the judgements of the acting stewards on the day are upheld, Irish racing supporters might just retain some hope that things may be changing. However, given that 61% of all appeals were successful or partially successful in 2014, a betting man of a more pessimistic disposition is likely to wager on the punishments being reduced or perhaps overturned altogether. The appeals will certainly make for interesting test cases.
