FOUR bookmakers were on Thursday told they were no longer welcome on subscription channel Racing UK in a dramatic heightening of British racing’s stand-off with bookmakers over the controversial authorised betting partners initiative.

Less than 24 hours before representatives of William Hill, Coral, Ladbrokes and Sky Bet were scheduled to attend a meeting with RUK to agree the next 12 months of paid-for appearances, the session was cancelled.

The betting operators, who have so far resisted overtures to achieve ABP status, were told the arrangement, which guaranteed branding and slots for the firm’s spokespeople on a rotating basis in return for a six-figure fee each, would cease from the end of this month if there is no change in their position.

The cancellation of the meeting at such short notice indicated a sudden hardening of the line being taken by the sport in its attempt to persuade more bookmakers to pay the sport a share of their remote betting business which is not subject to levy.

Now, can we expect the Racing Post to do the right thing and not print bookmaker ads from those mentioned above. If will only work if everyone in the racing industry sticks together and speaks with one voice. The likes of McCoy should take a good look at themselves and consider where they stand too. Are they in it for the money for themselves or do they love the game and want it to thrive.

McCoy likes money too much. The Post and ATR a million to join in.

I suppose theoretically RUK claim to put profits back into racing so they are more entitled to join in. Personally I consider the Racing Post more a betting industry puppet than part of "racing".

Not everyone gives a shat about the 'Honours System' or feels they have to refer to another human being as 'Sir' and that is their perogative imo!

They have to appeal to a broad audience. Yates fulfils his role as a time-filler when they only have Kempton on (in my opinion).

This piece is a little more concerning. Laddies won't be operating the on course betting shops at the festival.

Wonderful news. Those appalling 'ladbrokes life' adverts and the equally rancid skybet 'more of this' carp will no longer be polluting the airwaves, on RUK at least.

A Cheltenham spokeswoman confirmed on Thursday that the shops will have to be run by a firm which is an ABP. That dramatically reduces the options, since Bet365, Betfair and 32Red are the only major firms to have gained ABP status and of those only the first-named have any retail experience. Resolving this issue in short order must now be a high priority for the track, since a shortage of betting facilities on the site during the Festival would be a PR disaster

is there is a massive opportunity for betfair to get new customers using the exchanges , by running the on course shops and putting bets into the exchange

why do the bookies who have not  got abp status need to back down, Do you think punters will not bet an 8/1 shot with lads and decide to take 6/1 with 365 because they are an abp? No chance!

Betfair are only interested in their Sportsbook.

PaddyPowerBetfair can advertise, or run the shops, but PaddyPowerBetfair can't.

Don't really see the big deal that there won't be 2 ladbrokes shops at Cheltenham, there's hundreds of bookies on site, and a tote window every where you turn, add to that a large percentage of punters bet through apps on there phone. turn the empty shops into toilets, there needed!!

If this was going to happen why did they give Hayley O'Connor studio room today?

Who are they going to fill their betting slots with? Don't recall anyone from Bet365 ever making an appearance.

I don't know what the deal is for the course with the 2 betting shops, but presumably it's a source of decent income for them and that's the main issue?

Good news at last, well done RUK. More on the way Grand National week as well with the launch of 'Jimmy Justice For Punters' which should put the cat amongst the bookmaking pigeons!!

The other piece of good news in the article is that bookies reps may have no access to the parade ring, press room and other parts of the racecourse. So Mike Dillon and Simon Clare treated as lepers.

Great. Their appearances have no interest at all to me (and I hope most RUK viewers) and are pure meaningless adverts. I would rather listen to their worst pundits than the bookie reps.

Great timing as Victor has just come on board. I've never seen the major bookmakers so outflanked as they have been here. They will be desperate to promote their businesses on Racing UK during Cheltenham and to make it worse they will have to watch their rivals get all the publicity.

The worst thing about those reps, Clare et al is they profess to be racing fans but when push comes to shove they choose big business over racing.

It would be funny if Dillon and Clare had to pay an admission fee like most people do.

An excellent move by RUK, and one which will have the bookies scratching their heads.

Whilst the rancid Post may have no morals and continue to entertain the slime, this ban represents a welcome change in RUK's policy towards bookies and their reps.

It is to be hoped that when the bookies cave in, (and they will ) RUK can stand up for their subscribers in a similar way, and bring up the ever increasing problem of account restrictions, which again, effects racing's income.

A principled stand by someone in racing! Hooray.

The disappearance from our (RUK) screens of the likes of Clare, Williams, Ivan-Duke et al is welcomed like the relief experienced when stepping out of a lift in which someone has farted.

In fairness to Clare, not that I particularly wish to be, he does at least have shares in a couple of platers with Zoe Davison.

RUK should now broadcast live shows from an exchange shop. Show the future of betting not the past.

RUK unlike ATR have never shown exchange prices before. I will start to believe this conversion when they show the exchange prices.

Credit where credit is due, everyone can play a small part via social media, if u have a twitter account facebook etc etc unfollow anyone connected with non paying ABP bookmakers. alienation of punters is what they seem good at, why not alienate them in whatever way u can. I have cancelled subs to RP, TForm, stopped buying the weekender, I had cancelled RUK sub but may consider that now again, we will see what becomes of this news and whether a cave in is avoided by RUK. re- Timeform i was a religious follower until they sold their soul to BF(bookie) which in turn has now sold its soul to PP..a non compliant.

So if RUK no longer get these six figure payments for advertising from these non ABP firms can we expect the subscription to go through the roof to cover this black hole in their finances

interesting one this, ruk been going more and more down the atr route taking money from bookmakers who no doubt get influence over the ruk coverage and air time in return, but of course ruk's first priority is to the tracks they represent and given some of them are taking a stance against the bookmakers ruk are left in the middle, so it could be seen as them being principled, and i hope it is, but not sure they had much choice

RUK is not an entirely independent television broadcaster.

It is owned by the RACECOURSES that they show -

- and nearly 50% of the Racecourses broadcast by RUK belong to Jockey Club Racecourses

Quite correct, onlooker, although I would assume most people knew that already and it's no reason not to celebrate.
