Yes, Fred Winter had a wonderful bunch of horses for several years......ones that spring to mind are indeed, Pendil, Bula, Lanzarote, Comedy of Errors, Brown Chamberlain, Fifty Dollars More, and many more.
Funny thing for me though is that I never sort of "bonded" with any of the Lambourn horses in the way I felt real attachment to the great Northern horses of the time. We recently discussed the Michael Dickinson stable, but also I still remember with great affection the Northern horses like... Eckbalco..Sea Pigeon, Night Nurse, Little Owl, Jodami ...etc. Strange really because I'm not really a bona fide Northerner . Anyone feel the same? |

Unlucky in 2 Gold Cups - edged out by the Dikler in one, brought down in another, though in truth, he possibly didn't quite get the 3m2f at Cheltenham - perhaps like Wayward Lad. But, but for those 2 Gold Cup defeats, he would have won his first 20 races over fences. He was the best jumper of a fence I've seen, in that he seemed to be pretty much foot perfect at every fence - not extravagant - just spot on. 'That' picture, taken by Ed Byrne, was reproduced on another thread by Greg Gory, I think, so he must have it in his photo library somehow.

Pendil won the Massey-Ferguson under 12-7, so it's not as if he didn't handle Cheltenham. That's a record for the race (that'll never be broken). Flyingbolt won it under 12-6. Arkle failed under 12-10 (a week after winning the Hennessy under 12-7).

I was Cheltenham festival '74 to watch Pendil win the Gold Cup, sadly not to be....felt numb after that race. Agree with the OP!

Pendil was always described as the best horse not to win a Gold Cup ,until Wayward Lad entered the argument.
Wayward Lad would have a Gold Cup victory if all the horses carried the same weight in 1986 , but for some bizarre reason he had to give weight to the victor .....not my idea of a championship race. It could also be argued that Tied Cottage is the best chaser not to win the Gold Cup ,following his 1980 disqualification alongside a last fence fall and 3rd place. Imo Bula is the best chaser not to win a Gold Cup , the mudbath of 1975 allowing the plodder Ten Up to beat the legendary Bula. |

You could say "best chaser not to win the Gold Cup that ran in it" but you'd be hard pressed to compare him with Flyingbolt, who didn't.
Fulke Walwyn always maintained The Dikler should have won by 5 lengths in 73, having tried to go up Charile Potheen's inside two out, getting checked, losing momentum and finding himself adrift of Pendil. As good a quality Gold Cup as you'll see, run in a record time. |

Fred Winter did indeed train some wonderful horses richgit but imo the second best he trained next to Pendil was Killiney. He was some horse over shorter distances. Sad day when he fell and was tragically killed.
 Fred Rimell and Fulke Walwyn too trained some brilliant jumpers. It seems that the trainers and the horses were much better back then but then again, maybe it`s just nostalgia as one gets old. |

Nostalgia is without doubt part of it, that and the fact that we did not have race by race television coverage each and every day of the week.
The odd week day meetings were greatly anticipated and recorded no doubt by many who were working, to view at leisure in the evening, trying to avoid finding out the results was the hardest part, similar to the Likely Lads doing their utmost to hearing a football result before the screening of MOTD...! |

Grand Canyon was a wonderful horse but he was a NZ bred and trained by Derek Kent in England. Think you are mixed up because he won the Colonial Cup in USA.

Dramatist was with Fulke Walwyn, Grand Canyon put Derek Kent in the limelight for a while, another he trained was Navigation, a smashing little trier with the heart of a lion, always felt sorry for Peter Haynes who rode GC in all its early races only to lose the ride to John Francome when they went to the States.

Sea Pigeon was a magnificent animal. Lot of people don`t realise it or remember but he did run over fences but just the once I think.

anyone remember that race where you had to qualify by running in one of a series of races where the final was run at Chepstow...seem to remember very promising winning the final one year

I would suggest Browne's Gazette as a leading contender for the best hurdler not to win the Champion.
He beat See You Then by a country mile prior to the big race. |

I remember very promising winning as I went up the betting shop to do it in a win\ win \ double with desert hero in the imperial cup but changed my mind and did half free instead of very promising

Sempervivum was a good'un. As a 10yo, he was top weight in the Schweppes Hurdle - trying to give 3 lbs to 5yo Persian War, who'd win the Champion Hurdle the following month, and the next 2. he split Salmon Spray and Flyingbolt - talking of which - what would the latter have done if he hadn't won the Champion Chase the day before, or had a bit of recent practice over hurdles?

Pendil was indeed one of the greats, but one horse not mentioned on this thread (not that I can see anyway) is Captain Christy. Not one of the better jumpers, but when he was on song, he was awesome. Beat Bula twice, once over hurdles, and again over a chase course, no less than 30L in the KG, a race he won twice beating Pendil. Also won the Cheltenham Gold cup beating The Dikler.
