Would have had to give 17lb to Smad Place...

Would he have been able to dominate as todays winner did? Would they have cut each others throat with both going off in front?

A 12 length victor of the Hennessy off 155, means the winner has to be considered as rated high enough to get a place, at least, in the Gold Cup though not convinced the course necessarily suits him, but granted he's been placed in an RSA, Betbright Cup and 2 World Hurdles.

If he were mine I'd go to the King George (course winner) and then Aintree.

Would Smad Place have been ridden differently if Coneygree had been in the field.
I reckon if Coney had gone off in front and Smad had sat a few lengths off him, Smad would still have won. If they got in a duel, the race might have fallen apart and Theatre Guide could been a fortunate winner.

Sorry,didn't really answer the question.
2nd if avoiding a speed duel and able to lead. In the ruck if going head to head with Smad.

Beat him 27lengths in the GC, Coneygree unbeaten at Newbury & both love this type of ground, would had been a very interesting race.

I find it hard to imagine how Coneygree would have won, Smad finished the race so well with a big weight, imagine how well he would have finished with 8lb less?

Coneygree not running may prove to be a blessing in disguise for connections.

Hard to believe Smad Place was in the same form he was today when he ran in the Gold Cup.

What a Gold Cup it was with a National winner and Hennessey winner coming out of it so far

Easy to say that BB after he won so impressively.

Last year he did not have a prep race and made a bad mistake in the home straight in last years hennessey. This years races was more of seasoned handicappers race with very few 2nd season novices who can outrun their rating.

I have no doubt whatseover that the prep run helped and that he performed better this year than he did in last year's Hennessy. But I don't think he showed that sort of form in the 2015 Cheltenham Gold Cup for whatever reason. I suspect the trip stretches him at Cheltenham on soft ground tbh.

I tend to agree bb, i backed him last year and only had a saver today as i could not face seeing him win without me having a little bit on, it also helped me move into 3rd in comps.

On a positive note on my walk home i was alongside an Alan King horse box and on the outside it had displayed '2015 Hennessey winner' , really needed to be into this selfie crap at that time.

Nice touch Newbury.

Similar scenario here, bar the tipping comps.
As you say, good work from the racecourse. I like to see Alan have a big race winner, he's a top bloke.
