There is some excellent racing throughout the country today, with the Hennessy Gold Cup taking centre stage at Newbury, and the Fighting Fifth the feature race on Newcastle's card. It is a Paul Nicholls runner that heads north for his engagement that has caught my attention today, with Virak looking primed to run a big race in the Rehearsal at Newcastle.
Paul Nicholls is not a frequent visitor to Newcastle with his runners, but heads north again with Irving to defend his Fighting Fifth crown, Virak is also on the horse box and I'd assume it's not just to keep Irving company on the long journey up. Connections will no doubt have been pleased with his comeback run in the Sodexo Gold Cup at Ascot running on ground quicker than ideal, with that race Imo also being considerably deeper than his assignment today. He is still only a 6yrold and has a nice lightly raced profile, the suggestion being he has chunks of improvement still left to make.
The riding arrangements today also look very interesting, with Nicholls having used claiming jockeys to good effect on him in his previous two campaigns. He now charges his stable conditional Harry Cobden with the task of getting the best out of this promising young chaser, with his 7lb allowance looking a huge positive for a young lad that looks presently a very accomplished rider. All of Virak's best form has come on a soft surface or worse, that not surprising considering he's french bred, with today's surface at Newcastle looking set to ride very much on the slow side. Tripo and ground look in his favour today, and having shown a liking for galloping left handed expanses like Doncaster and Haydock I'd think Newcastle will also suit his style, 7-1 a very fair price considering.
