HE WAS listed as a gelding but all was not as it seemed as far as Thursday’s Southwell seller winner Ginger Joe was concerned as, after being knocked down to David Brown for 9,500gns, it was discovered he is, in fact, a rig.

The two-year-old son of Medicean, who ran for Richard Hannon on Thursday, made all to get off the mark at the fifth attempt and was subsequently sold to local trainer Brown.

However, Brown did not quite get what he bargained for with Ginger Joe found to be a rig – a male horse carrying either one or two testicles concealed in his abdomen, making him appear to be a gelding.

Brown explained: “Ginger Joe went to the vets’ box and someone shouted over that although the passport said he was a gelding, he was actually a rig.”

Sale stands

Brown has no recourse to return Ginger Joe because, according to stipendiary steward Louise Moore, winners of sellers are “sold as seen”.

She said: “A claimer would have been different, but selling winners are subject to different rules and it’s up to the auctioneer whether the sale stands. As David Brown said he would keep the horse, no further action was taken.

“The stewards didn’t hold an inquiry because it was outside their remit, but the BHA and Weatherbys will be checking the error in the passport stating he was a gelding wasn’t an administrative one.”

At Redcar this month the Marco Botti-trained Sammy’s Warrior was claimed by trainer Jim Best, but it was found he was not a colt, as stated, but a gelding. As a result, Botti, who took him back and covered costs involved, was fined £200 at a BHA hearing on Thursday.

I should have headed it 'He bought a Rig in a poke'
How long will it take the RP to update his status?

What is a rig exactly, a colt with a camouflaged penis?

I'm pretty sure these terms are correct:

Colt = Male horse with penis
Gelding = Male horse with penis chopped off
Mare = Female horse

Rig = Colt with camouflaged penis (Colt that looks like a Gelding)?

Couldn't the trainer simply get a chainsaw and chop the horse's penis off and its accessories after giving it some painkillers to correct the situation?

Or why not put the colt (that he thought was a gelding) into the barn with the mares, let them mate to generate lots of free horses and within two years they'd be ready to race.

Usually a horse with one testicle.
Selkirk,a rather successful stallion, only had one ball. I think the other one failed to drop, became infected and was removed.

And a gelding is castrated in a European not a Chinese manner. It has a penis left I believe.

A true rig is a male horse that is carrying either one or two testicles concealed in its abdomen, making it visually appear to be a gelding, while behaving like a stallion. These horses are medically described as a cryptorchid, literally meaning “hidden testicle”.

Vets base their diagnosis of cryptorchidism on the horse’s history, palpation of the scrotum and blood tests, which identifies the male hormones secreted from the concealed testicle.

Unless a vet explores the area surgically, it is extremely difficult to feel accurately the position of the misplaced testicle. Most colts do not take too kindly to being groped and diagnostic aids such as ultrasound can yield confusing results :-)

Basic common sense would tell you that was Nonsense - let alone any knowledge of thoroughbred Racehorses.

Ridiculous when a trainer does not know the sex of the horse he trains, Botti did the same recently, Jim Best claimed the colt but it was a gelding

So does that mean it was carrying overweight then?

Unless that was just fishing above, I'm not sure a gelding actually has its penis cut off!

It would be a much more complicated medical procedure to cut off the penis as it would obviously seriously affect the ability to pee. The Chinese eunuchs suffered this more drastic operation but there was a much higher death rate compared to simple castration as practised in the middle east and some of Europe.
