Fairly new to racing but love the sport. Channel 4 keep harping on about Kauto Star. Just how good was this horse and why so much affection towards him?!

He was the best horse I've ever seen. In his first Gold Cup winning season, he tackled 3m for the first time in the Betfair Chase, dropped down to 2m for the Tingle Creek to beat that season's Champion Chase winner without coming out of second gear, and then won the King George and Gold Cup. He had the pace for two miles and the class to stay 3m2f.
His jumping was breathtaking at best but in his early days he had a tendency to crash through the last fence, which added to the excitement of following him.
After all the brilliance, when everyone thought his grade 1 winning days were over, he came back to win the Betfair Chase and King George again at rising 12.
