It was a poor call, but one that I guess many would have made at the time I did. I wouldn't write him off, the winner is useful, Faugheen looked a bit burly, the ground was heavy in places and it was his first race of the season. He will be a different horse next time out and I still think he will win the CH.

Correct, horses are not machines (Frankel excepted Wink) but it's way too early to discount Faugheen, even Mullins and Walsh were both mystified. Maybe something will be discovered later in the week, but maybe it's just one of those things that happens in racing occasionally.

Ironically Faugheen got beat going for his 11th straight hurdle win, the same number that Sprinter Sacre was going for when he was surprisingly beaten at Kempton in 2013 - and both first run of the season !

surely that applies to the winner aswell?bit like when England get beat at football and blame conditions yet other team managed fine

warhan, my point was that heavy conditions may have suited the winner more than Faugheen, and maybe he was more forward at this stage of the season (although he had been trounced in a gallop last week). That wasn't Faugeens true running, he travelled OK for 10f, but never looked like he was the current champion hurdler thereafter (although he stayed on again in the last 100 yds). He didn't jump 2 of the last 3 hurdles well either, if he had, I probably wouldn't be typing these words now.

faugheen is a poor jumper, always has been, luckily his jumping never got put under pressure in the champion last year because they went plumpton bumper pace

Faugheen is no Night Nurse, but he's not a poor jumper by any means
