Today's Greatwood Hurdle looks an extremely deep contest, with what looks a well assembled field of largely unknown quantities. It has been dominated by younger leg's over the years, with only 3 horses winning over the age of 7 in the last 28 renewals, 5 & 6 yrolds winning the bulk of those races within this time frame.
Weight carrying performances have also been noticeable among recent winners, with 8 of the last 13 renewals going to a horse carrying 11-06lb +, on 4 occasions in this time it has been won with top weight of 11-11lb. For this reason I've decided to include Nicky Henderson's Sign Of A Victory in today's betting, who, like plenty of his predecessors in the race does look to have more than a touch of class about him. He is extremely lightly raced, with a highly progressive profile, just the type of horse that does well in this race. His comeback run at Ascot at the end of last month was extremely encouraging, being produced to hit the front jumping 2 out, but despite being headed thereafter he stuck to the task really well, race fitness looking to find him out when trying to concede lumps of weight all round to some extremely likable types. However I am worried that the ground may have gone against him, and does look to have more on his plate in terms of the opposition, but with that run behind him he should be spot on for today's assignment and if he handles conditions is sure to get a more accommodating pace to take him into the race, hopefully that may carry him into a placing at least.
Because of the deterioration of the ground I'm also playing the soft ground specialist Ebony Express, who does look a different animal when the mud's a flying. He has ground to make up with Waxie Dargle on his last run in the Vincent O'Brien at the festival, but looking at his overall form that race may just have came to quick, connections obviously having to have a go with an extremely big bonus to be had after winning the Imperial Cup at Sandown 6 day's prior. Like plenty in the line up he has a very pleasing improving profile, and at least has shown he appreciates the hustle and bustle of a big field scenario when winning that Cup race. Dr Newland has his yard in decent form presently, so I'd imagine this lad should be primed for a decent show, especially now the ground has come in his favour.
Unlucky Robster. Thought Sign would have a chance as overnight conditions were dry, mild and windy - but clearly the course has not improved much.
Have gone with Renneti and Devilment myself but good luck with Ebony.
