I prefer front runners to hold up horses, probably because every time I bet one they always seem to find trouble no matter how big the field. So I was thinking about the great front runners from the past and my favourites were:
Hi G2D, not been well mate. Hope you and Muttley are both well.
I just seen The Martian and going into relapse!
Which stable mate? There were quite a few front running nutters in the yard!

Must be a NeC thing north east - loved that horse as well as the OP's namesake from same yard - Frankel in the guineas was sensational AND practically everything that ran under the Martin Pipe banner in late 70's- early 80's with so many running up large sequences with races won after barely two hurdles.
Two others stick in the memory though not sure if they were true front runners - Carigeen Hill and a Gordon Richards novice chaser that im sure won its first ten races and was sadly killed before it reached his prime - name escapes at moment but will come back to me

Danish Rhapsody, trained by Lady Herries. A good friend of mine was involved with the horse and we had a right good punt at Folkestone where he won before making all next time out at Goodwood where we won stupid amounts of money. An unbelievably game little horse who won several times at the Sussex track.

Not picking on Mrcombustible but Anaglogs Daughter wasn't trained by Ted Durkan.
He was nominally trained by Bill Durkan but actually trained by Ferdy Murphy.
Also thought Skryne was trained by Waring Willis.
Limestone Lad Muir Attivo Ben Stack.

Sorry Wildman I meant to say Bill Durkan rather than Ted. Yes Bill held the licence and Ferdy did the work.
Regarding Skryne from memory he was owned by Waring Willis and I think he was trained by Dreaper and Willis at various stages, I could be wrong.Maybe I am mixing him up with another horse as Dreaper had a lot of front runners.

I see Out and About has been mentioned. My early memories of the GN always have him a fence clear. Actually Arkle was often a front runner. People's memories/knowledge of him tend to come from the 64 GC when he was held up but after that he was inclined to go off in front ( not against Dunkirk of course ).
