...the Horris Hill Stakes and the Houghton Stakes were contested by really good horses?
Now - just like the Hanson, Haynes & Clark - they are just nothing races, with little or no chance of throwing up a classic winner...

Nothing to do with Newbury obviously but what about Salse winning the Beeswing Stakes? Worth 17k in 1998,,,now a 0-95 and worth 7k.

Arab - as opposed to EVERYBODY else - Coolmore excepted ...
- most notably the battalion of BRITISH Owner/Breeders that racing used to have. Nowadays - any 2-yr-old that shows any potential is snapped up by Godolphin, Qatar, Al Shaqab et al - so they don't then run 3 or 4 of those acquisitions against each other in the better 2-yr-old races - whereas those horses would have been 3 or 4 individual runners in those races, in years gone by. -------------- Houghton Stakes nowhere near as significant a race as Horris Hill, etc. Houghton Stakes has never even been Listed status. In fact, you would struggle to recall the record of many of the past Winners. The only one of any significance that I could find was - Barathea - in 1991. |

thx onlooker but I am sure there were a few very good horses that ran in the Houghton. I remember Barathea winning first time out, under Dettori at maybe 9-1 but I am sure there were a few good ones before that. Like the Hanson Haynes maybe a few good ones were placed.

Henry Cecil used to run some nice horses in the Houghton Stakes. Ivano was one of his that won it, I think, perhaps first time out. Maybe Noel Murless, before him, used it in a similar way. If trainers like them believed in using the race to introduce nice horses, then you'd get nice horses in it. It's like that with the Wood Ditton. Noel Murless believed in the race, and often ran a nice one in it, because it fitted with his style of training and the horses that he had, and the alternative races (or lack of) that there were then. Once he packed up, the standard of the Wood Ditton dropped. Perhaps it was the same with the Houghton when Cecil experienced a major dip in fortunes.

The 1-2-3 in the 1979 Houghton were MVO'B's Night Alert, Posse, and Bireme. After Nureyev's DQ in the following year's Guineas, Posse and Night Alert filled the places; and Bireme won the Oaks. (She carried a penalty in the Houghton, having won her only previous start, so was giving the 2 colts weight in that race)

The 1978 Houghton was won by One In A Million, who won the 1000 Guineas (and the Coronation Stakes) the following year, but although she had won her only race coming into the Houghton, she didn't even go off favourite. That was because Milford was in the race. He was a colt D1ck Hern trainer for the Queen, who had been 2nd in his only run, and so was getting weight from Cecil's filly. He would go on to win the Lingfield Derby trial, be Lester Piggott's mount in the Derby, go off jt 3rd fav at Epsom, but finish down the field behind his stable companion.
Ivano won the Houghton debut in 1981, and would go on to win the Dee Stakes at 3, and a couple of other Group 3 races. |

The 1977 Houghton was won by another Hern/Hollingsworth horse (like Bireme) in Admirals Launch - one of the few offspring by Brigadier Gerard to be at all useful. He went on to win the Craven Stakes at 3. So it looks like it was Hern as much as anyone who was upholding the standard of the race around these years.
The 1977 race was also notable, perhaps, for the racecourse debut of the equine Mars Bar kid, No Bombs, then trained by Gavin Pritchard-Gordon. |

The 1976 was notable for the introduction of another Hern colt - a record-breaker - not on account of what he did, but what he cost. He was called Million, and when bought as a yearling for 202,000gns, it was a European record. He didn't win the Houghton, or anything of note.

The 1975 Houghton was notable for the debuts of the filly Roses For The Star (one of the last of the progeny of Libra, who had already produced Ribocco, Ribero and Libra's Rib), and who herself was best known for getting placed in a bunch of Group races, including the Oaks; and Bright Finish, a stayer of Jeremy Tree's who went on to win the Yorkshire Cup and Jockey Club Cup. I don't know who won it though.

The 1973 filed is quite interesting. The first 2 home were the fillies Shebeen and Furioso. Shebenn went on to be a G2/G3 staying filly of Bruce Hobbs, who won 2 Princess Royals and a Cumberland Lodge, and Furioso was a filly of Harry Wragg's who was 2nd in the Oaks.
But also, a horse that was in the racecard, but was taken out overnight, was Roman Warrior, the giant sprinter of Nigel Angus's, who was due to have his 2nd run. |

Roman won the Ayr g/cup and a host of other races , he was huge .

Henry Cecil won the Houghton with Carmelite House in 1987 who looked like a superstar when winning it but proved disappointing as a 3yo, also had the 2nd in the race a year late with Monsagem who was 5th in Nashwan's Guineas

Tip - yes - I hadn't previously noticed, but he was also declared in the first race on the card, a division of the 6f Snailwell maiden over 6f, and won at 3/1 fav ridden by Eddie Hide. He'd run 3rd on his debut. The Houghton was over 7f.

Fidway, I think the Haynes Hanson race took over from the Houghton as THE race for very promising late developers.

I note Ryan Price's Levanter made his debut in the 1970 Houghton. I can't find the result, but I remember this horse being Ante-post favourite for the Derby at one point, before fading out of the picture completely, and I think he may have been an impressive winner of the Houghton.

....Levanter had been 11/4 AP fav for the Derby before failing miserably in the Chester Vase (won by Linden Tree), after which he was knocked out to 8/1. He never made it to the Derby (won by Mill Feef from Linden Tree).
