todays c/fwd pool increased from 43,681 to 52,170,.so about  8500 .What a ludicrous idea to change the bet to six handicaps  at two meetings,
the pool will increase incredibly slowly if these changes are maintained.

Was going to post a thread about it on the day it was announced but in the end said, if these people arranging such things are that clueless then what's the point.

My figures tell me I'm 24k down in 2015 so far on the JP, that's despite getting it up a number of times.  So it's fair to say I help get it started when it gets over the 25k mark, I know a couple of others that do the same, if I stick a grand in when it's around 25k I'm effectively making myself no better than a 20/1 shot on that day to win it.

Was aware that there was 40k+ in it today and didn't even bother looking at it...unheard of for me.  Tells you all you need to know.

People concentrate on one meeting - study for it and have a go.  When you go racing you hear every time it's at that particular track 'Ladies and gents the Jackpot is here today with X£ in it'.  It's a pot builder - now the announcement will be in the shops and at the track, today's Jackpot is at Ascot, Moscow and Mars.

Well done to the marketing team over at Fred's, sorry the Tote, you understand the punter perfectly with this move. Crazy

If they had any idea of how to invigorate it they'd start it every day at 25k and within two meetings it would be 100k meaning they more than cover the initial outlay within 48hours with the implied odds on their side of helping build a 200k+ bet v.quickly which they then cream off 65k+....anyways there you go.

Jackpot set for overhaul in bid to arrrest decline

The Tote Jackpot is set for one of the biggest overhauls in its near 50-year history as Betfred attempt to arrest and reverse the declining fortunes of the bet.

From Tuesday the Jackpot will no longer consist of races from just one meeting Sad  in a strategy turnaround which Totepool say will allow them the freedom to select six competitive contests on a daily basis.

They hope that by making the bet harder to win Cry  they will be able to produce bigger pools and rollovers to create situations when punters can win a life-changing amount for a modest outlay. CryLaughGrin

The bet's ultimate organisers Betfred said the new measures were needed to drive Jackpot turnover, which they claimed had stagnated as a result of the fall in field sizes suffered by British racing in recent years.

The bookmakers said that had contributed to a fall in average pool sizes and dividends which Totepool were "committed" to reverse.

Betfred and Totepool managing director Mark Stebbings said:"The Tote Jackpot is all about eyecatching numbers and unfortunately we haven't seen enough of them in recent years. In order to market the bet to the maximum and to a wider audience we need big pools and big winners. We want to create millionaires with our Jackpot bet.

"We are very much aware that moving away from a one-meeting system is a big shift, but all our research tells us it will reinvigorate the bet. The £15m Scoop6 proved what can be achieved with pool betting in this country and we want to sprinkle a little bit of that stardust on to the Tote Jackpot. Laugh

"We fully believe having the freedom to create a more competitive Tote Jackpot on a daily basis will benefit our customersCry and make the bet more exciting." LaughGrin

"I have also tasked the marketing team to explore opportunities to market the revamped Tote Jackpot to a wider public."

Other aspects of the Jackpot will stay unchanged, with the minimum stake remaining £1 off course and £2 on course. Totepool will also run a Placepot across all six Jackpot races.

Terrible mistake by Betfred.  As Studious says, there was always a decent roll-up of racecourse mug money after big meets like R Ascot or York.   That will plunge now.

This decision has come completely out of the blue, with not a murmur around racing, and on the likes of here ...where most things being mooted do not get missed, and are consequently commented upon.

Completely agree. I was a regular jackpot player with decent stakes but I'll no longer be taking part. The general public aren't going to get involved and nor are middle staking punters. The jackpot will go up very very slowly from now on.

The new bet coincides with me studying the bet ,everyday, for just under a year.If I owned the Tote/Betfred I
would say Every Friday was JACKPOT FRIDAY ,with a guaranteed 50K,at the usual one meeting.Occasionally the pool
may not reach the 36.5 k needed to cover the cost of this guarantee ,but this would happen on only very tough cards
(so are unlikely to be won) and the boosted pools over the year would more than make up for it .

The pools are going to build up so much slower now. Yesterday the pool would have gone up to around 100k if it had been held at one meeting. It may well have been won but it would only take a few days and it would be back towards that level again. It's going to take a few days to get to 100k now anyway because there is very little incentive to do it spread over 6 very tough races.

Yes it is, but it's going to take so long to get there. Mugs will not do it everyday. There was nothing wrong with the jackpot as it is apart from taking on the idea which Blunder suggested. In fact when Fred took the jackpot over they were more or less on a slightly lower scale to start with and it did reinvigorate the jackpot with pools increasing day by day much quicker than before.

There must be a load of money in the JP pool from on-course recreational punters who mark their selections in the paper on the way down and then do a JP & PP on the perms for £32 or whatever, and that money's just going to vanish surely?

like the lottery and everywhere else that people( before the watershed)make free money form others, they simply dont want you to win until the pots have been filled and will do everything to make sure you dont
Report Barton Bank October 14, 2015 1:47 PM BST
I might have the odd go at it when it hasn't been won for ages and there is loads of dead money in the pools.
That aside, no interest in it.
If they really want to promote the bet they should cut the takeout to 10-15 percent.
Report Ramruma October 14, 2015 2:01 PM BST
Loss One: Two meetings loses money from racegoers, who can't be at both courses, though perhaps Fred hopes they'll double their placepot stakes instead.

Loss Two: Six handicaps deters the smaller players whose  perms become unaffordable without any bankers.

Though personally speaking, I'd like to see the jackpot abolished, I'm not sure Fred has thought this through; maybe he hopes the losses will be more than made up if big rollovers draw people in.

about 1.5 million.Similarly ,the Scoop 6 is ridiculously difficult, I only tried it once!

I'd prefer it if they made the placepot 7 races which is what most racecards are these days. Could produce some really big dividends.

The Jackpot is a waste of time IMO, milks the small punter until the big boys cream off the big payout - it's hard enough to get the placepot up.

We all know that the chancer pays the lowest wages in the industry leaving us to top them up with "tax credits" but at least find someone at senior level with a brain..

What is going on with that firm - the mainstay is going senile but surely someone can pick up the ball and run with it...

I thought the idea , of the jackpot, was to beat what the SP of 6 winners would pay. Check today's SPs over 1/4 million.
