Korals have started only taking on managers from outside the industry who have a proven sales track record.

Many staff who have been in the industry for many years are now unable or not eligible to apply for the posts, yet deputies have been told it is their responsibility to train these new managers.

Staff from 2 shops in York were so fed up with the new rules that during Ebor week they all walked out leaving their AM to find cover from other areas, this included Korals paying travel fees and overnight accommodation.

I was of that week but had I known I could have volunteered for the late shifts and saved myself the hotel fees.

.... "a proven sales track record."

How the Betting shop game must have changed. Cry

Imagine them try to work out a 50p Each-Way (Equally Divided) Yankee -

- with 1 race a Quarter the odds, 2 races a 5th the odds, and 1 race a third the odds 2 places only  ...
- along with a 15p Rule 4 in one race, and a 30p Rule 4 in another...
- with Winners at 15/8 and 11/4, and Placed horses at 7/2 and 100/30.

Most horse race bets would be settled by the EPOS system, and I suspect that on the rare occasion that fails, or for the rare bet that wont go through it, they have a settling machine to do it with.

But as someone who used to mentally settle bets, it scared me what some other people would put into the machine to settle bets. "Best" example, a £100 double, one at Evens, one at 2/1, and had to use machine to settle it!

Glad I'm out, even if I was in call centre last 8 years or so in industry

Onlooker... Can you remembr the name of those big 'calculator-type' machines that LBO managers used to settle the types of bets in your example?

that desktop sporting life model was the mercedes of settling machines, a bit ahead of its time, only person i saw having one was a ladbrokes manageress back around early 80's. they werent cheap, she must have bought her own. very easy to use, no monitor just a display if i remember right. never used an old genie but they were popular around that time. most just had to use a calculator with crash blokes, pyramid blocks and add a point settling methods. the good old days

I always remember the Corals manageress who tried to pay me £314.99 for £195 on an 8/13 winner. She showed me the result on her calculator. I just laughed at her!

On my second day as an office junior at Shermans head office in Cardiff, I asked my manager why a £1 dbl on 2/1 & 10/3 was settled at £12.99.

He said, 'that's what the genie says son'

in my area there are only 4 shops, Korals took two dynamic whiz kids from the retails sector on 3 months ago as new managers, the AM said we could all learn from them.

this week both of the have handed their notice in, we should indeed learn from them
