EL FENIX very weak in market here.

Good ride if you laid it! Thought it was the likeliest winner of the race but left it alone because he was riding and it was twice the price I though it should be.
Wouldn't say it wasn't trying but raced wide with no cover and also possibly stretched my the trip. It looked the best handicapped horse in the race to be and I would back it another day in that grade.

I backed El Fenix when he won last time at Goodwood, but this was, if not a harder race then a more open one, with any of half a dozen plausible winners, and at a longer trip on a different surface. I'm not surprised he lost, and I wouldn't have been surprised if he'd won.

Is he tripless, perhaps, as he seems to race at a different distance each time?

I don't think it is tripless. I backed it at Goodwood as well, but crucially it was very strong in the market that day.

Debut - well backed at 5/2. Very unsuual for this stable and suggests the horse was thought well above average but finished only 5/7.
Next 2 runs - well beaten in maidens at big prices. Objective of getting the horse handiacpped achieved.
Run 4 - Set a lot to do and never invovled at 20/1 round a track that suits prominent races. A sighter.
Run 5 - Money down, won well and gave the impression there are more wins in him.
Run 6 - Weak in the market, given an ordinary ride.

We will see what happens the next few starts. I expect the horse to win or at least go very close the next time it is strong in the betting.
