Lee hands over reins to daughter Kerry By Lee Mottershead 10:39AM 6 JUL 2015
THE training career of Richard Lee has come to an end after the man responsible for two Coral Welsh Grand National winners and major victories at Cheltenham and Aintree decided to hand over the reins to daughter Kerry, who will have her first runners at Uttoxeter on Tuesday.
After completing all the necessary BHA preparation modules, Kerry Lee, who has previously been closely associated with Channel 4 Racing, has taken over the licence at the Bell House yard situated on the Shropshire-Herefordshire border, from where Top Gamble was trained to win the Grade 2 Future Champions Novices’ Chase at Ayr in April.
Prior to that, Richard Lee had enjoyed considerable success with his string, most notably in recent years at Chepstow, where Le Beau Bai landed the Welsh National in 2011, two years before stablemate Mountainous took the same marathon prize. Earlier evidence of Lee’s adeptness with staying chasers came with the triumph of long-time stable star Delius in the 1988 Mildmay Novices’ Chase. Swardean completed back-to-back wins for the yard in the Aintree feature in 1989, while at the same venue Macgeorge landed the Martell Cup - now the Betfred Bowl - in 1999.
Supported by his wife, Carol, Lee was also twice a winner at the Cheltenham Festival, taking the 1993 Grand Annual Chase with Space Fair and the 1998 Mildmay of Flete Challenge Cup with Super Coin.
Kerry Lee said: “I am delighted to be taking over the reins. We remain very much a family business with mum and dad right behind me.
“I will have my first two runners tomorrow with Definite Future and Goldray heading to Uttoxeter. Definite Future will be the first - let’s hope he lives up to his name!”
Richard Lee, 68, added: "It's a new era for 'Team Lee'. I'm very lucky Kerry wants to take it on.
"It's nice all the owners are supporting her. With Kerry's new ideas and Carol's and my experience, it's onward and upwards."
