Just how do some of them get these gigs?

I saw a horse earlier today and its sire was Great Exhibition, whose name didn't ring a bell with me at all, so I checked on the RP and saw that the Godolphin colt was beaten in SIX maidens out of its 7 runs Shocked

I did a further bit of research on its numerous siblings assuming that it'd be closely related to some world-beater and by far & away the best I could find was the sire Rossini (his ½ brother) who hardly gets the pulse racing, as after a decade at stud, the best of his progeny have been handicappers!

The grand-dam was Ivory Wand (by Sir Ivor) whose name did sound familiar (was she a top performer in the 70's?) as she was the dam of Gold And Ivory - again, like Rossini, a decent horse but nothing special at all.

This has now got me wondering how many other nonentity stallions are out there...can anyone nominate something as bad as Great Exhibition?
The cheapest ever stud fees would be a start if anyone has access to such information.

In my view, the above mentioned must've been a teaser and I'm guessing that the stud-groom went outside the breeding shed for a quick fág and things probably got out of hand Mischief

full brother to elusive quality

Thanks Rider - I knew there must be something obvious I was missing...he's a decent sire but his record on the track wasn't so fabulous according to the RP website.

Just checked up on Elusive Quality and he's even better than I thought as a sire...I knew about Raven's Pass & Elusive Kate but he's also the sire of Smarty Jones, Quality Road & Sepoy.

could be why they took the chance with great exhibition, hoping for deja vu

That's an understandable argument if we're talking about a full brother (becoming a stallion despite moderate racecourse evidence) to something like Sadler's Wells or Sea The Stars whose pedigrees were littered with quality - that isn't the case with Great Exhibition...AND he was useless on the track!
Report the dealer July 4, 2015 7:25 PM BST
godolphin mine sweep all the elusive quality, they have had loads of them
Report Rider July 4, 2015 7:40 PM BST
yes its unusual but i suppose its worth taking the chance if you could produce something like ravens pass, far more common on the female side, golden horn's dam unraced (may have had a problems or not that good) but half sister to rebecca sharp and bingo, 2 pattern winners from 2
Report Navel-Gazer July 4, 2015 7:45 PM BST
99% of the time it's inconsequential for the colts being a prospective sire (just by relation) as they MUST have achieved something on the track - I don't think I've ever seen a career as bad as the one Great Exhibition had.

I agree that's a bit odd. Fairy Bridge turned out very useful but he never ran so a bit different.
Report Navel-Gazer July 4, 2015 7:55 PM BST
I wonder how much Great Exhibition has 'infected' the breed with his substandard jízz?

At least with mares/dams, there's only ONE offspring a year and in the main, they pass on their positive family genes/traits even when they're not so good on the racecourse.
There have been loads of well-bred mares with moderate form (or as mentioned unraced) on the track producing quality performers...I just can't remember any right now Blush
Wasn't Ouija Board's dam one of them?

Redoubtable, good old stick he was winning a load of races, but was never rated higher than 80 odd. His progeny ran 44 times, not one of them even hit the frame Sad

George - that's the prosecution case for equine eugenics!

Still...he had a lot more ability than Great Exhibition.

One who might have done better was Gentleman's Deal, not only a Derby winner (the winter version Wink), but by Danehill out of Guineas heroine Sleepytime!

As with life in general, it seems the females have carte-blanche to be as shít as they may be (and get rewarded for it) whilst the inferior males get their gonads strangled.

I'm sure there are some quality horses with no pedigree whatsoever, a weak horse on the racetrack doesn't mean he'll produce substandard horses(just like a vgood racehorse will only produce 5-10% quality racehorses as a stallion) and I'm sure Godolphin are just making sure the thoroughbred blood has enough diversity for next generations, hence the reason for running a global operation.
Report CheltenhamRoar July 5, 2015 3:06 PM BST
Great Exhibition should thank his lucky stars Ferguson wasn't around to run him over 8 Flights of Hurdles.
Report salmon spray July 5, 2015 4:31 PM BST
If he's a full brother to Elusive Quality he's hardly adding anything to the gene pool though incidentally that is another good reason for not sending yet another horse by Sandhill to stud.

I also believe that Zoffany who couldnt run fast enough to warm himself is now a sire. Cant see him being successful.
