most young punters have no interest in horses...

they also trust those sports more, albeit they have all had their own "problems" as well

not surprising really, what is surprising is that the BHA havent got a clue where its all going wrong, lets hope this new punters group isnt just there to tick a box

The game is effectively finished because there will not be another generation of punters willing to have a crack at betting regularly on Horse Racing. Some of the reasons for this are beyond the control of the BHA but plenty of them are the fault of the rank organisation and its bookmaker overlords.

You might be able to get young people to go racing on a Saturday with their mates or on a corporate piss up or a stag or hen do but the day to day racing at the minor tracks is living on borrowed time.

Small fields, odds-on favourites ... hmm.

for me sport is the same in terms of form , horses are peaked either when they come to themselves or when the trainer winds them up , same with athletes , murray will give u a good run for your money as hes motivated , usain bolt is not motivated and cant perform etc

The difference is that other sports are more interesting to people who have not been brought up on Horse Racing being the main/only viable medium for betting on Sport. They are also (rightly) perceived as being straighter.

horse racing is on a downward spiral....shame cos i love the horses but my kids/son in law laugh about the sport.

why would a "youngster" want to watch loads of televised races of horses going around an all weather track in exactly the same manner as the last race let alone go and watch it live

I have to buy a Racing Post to be fully informed.  I require nothing watching football, cricket or tennis.

There is also the unfamiliarity of horse racing. Youngsters more likely to have followed a football, tennis, cricket, rugby player/team etc so therefore in their own mind know more about an event from a betting perspective. Give them a list of horses names running around on a surface they haven't heard of and they're just picking a lucky name or number, or even worse listen to presenters and so called expert tipsters before doing their bollox

and as for going live racing....little or no atmosphere..50% of the people are pissed with a couple of spivs and low rent pretend gangsters strolling about not for me anymore and im old.

If I had been a punter starting out and backed either Fattsota there or the horse that fell over before the start and was allowed to run at Bath the other day, I would have written the Sport off straight away.

football is perfect for the next generation, apart from playing it/watching it from an early age, they can bet in-play and trade (cash out) which adds a lot to the experience, watch it all for free on the internet without an concern of being hoovered

i have punted most of my life but i prefer the american sport apart from rounders.as my daughter has grown up nothing has changed over the years thats why she calls it stuck inthe ages.the tweed wearers do make her chuckle with the big caps

Most youngsters are clever enough these days to know horse racing is completely bent, and if they aren't that clued up themselves, then their horse betting parents will have warned them to steer well clear of the sport. Racing these days is full of non triers, bent jockeys and trainers, horses being saved for handicap marks, or simply run down the field until connections want to have a touch. As a punter myself I would be devastated if I found out any of my kids were punting the horses or greyhounds, whereas I am quite happy for them to punt on Football or other sports. Horse racing has become the most difficult way of turning a profit that I know of, outside of the financial suicide of entering casinos.

my kids have a bet on the grand national and thats all.

They have not grown up with the nonsense of

football , minimum trebles
football , minimum 5 timer midweek

Other than the highest class of racing , there is a perception that not all racing is straight.....can't think why.

So many sports are now given saturation tv coverage ..... why would you bet on a sport which frequently utters phrases like :

Won on his side , shame he finished 8th
Better for the run
Trainer could give no reason for improved performance

Betfair has been very good for the successful punter who can't get on elsewhere but ultimately bad for the Sport as a whole.

Then again if bookmakers had been properly regulated and laid bets to allcomers then Betfair may never have taken off in the first place.

There was a period of time where Racing Post Greyhound TV talked about how to stop the decline of the sport. But did so every night for almost all night. I don't have the magic solution for them, but it was rather sobering and depressing to hear them every night come up with ideas but nothing done about any of them.

There are a huge number of ways horse racings integrity could be saved/improved, but there appears to be absolutely no enthusiasm from the sports governing bodies to do anything about it which has obviously affected the sports image very badly. The average horse racing punter learns his lessons the hard way, by doing their brains for years and years before they eventually see the light. A good punter will eventually find a sport that they have a half decent chance of at the very least breaking even....I.E. Football betting or similar.

Basilbrush you are totally correct what you have said on your posts.there is not a chance i would let my son have a bet at all on horse racing.hopefully our generation wont be like our dads generation my old man got me into racing from the early age of 15.1st bet was lucky 15 on a saturday i picked 4 pat eddery horses out they all won and i got £40 for my £1.50+15p tax.bloody hooked from that day on.... 30 years later i look back and think how much has that £40 win cost me
