I think Betfair should have a mini experiment of seeing what effect suspending the in-running market at say roughly the 1/2f pole or before the final fence in jumps would have.
At the moment (and it's highly unlikley to change) the 'wrong' type of person is winning the big money. Most of these track players are completely clueless about horseracing but they are taking the money off people on slower pictures who lack the discipline not to bet late.
Obviously if you have a winning system based on laying the field short or whatever, you might have reservations. But the opinion players on slower pictures need protecting.
It's 2015, they can send satellites around space, win wars using handheld toy aero planes, clone sheep and do human head transplants. They should be able to provide fast pictures to all on a level playing field.

They're not though going to provide faster pictures. At the moment a newcomer will be watching a worse picture (grainy, small screen), 2 seconds behind against people who've been doing it for 10 years.

Everyone knows there are people on track and/or faster pics etc. Surely if you do not have the above, don't play in the last furlong or before the last fence - personally I would say don't play in running at all.
Also if they are completely clueless and winning money, why not give it a go yourself and make your fortune??

My motivation is to see new blood come into the game with at least a chance of lasting. The situation we have at the moment is the most sophisticated players having all the advantages.
When I said track players are clueless I meant about horseracing in general, I don't dismiss their skills at what they do.

I personally am not too bothered about them with the faster pics. I use atr c4 whichever is on its fine for me. I can race read ok but do tend to chalk up a lay in running before a race anyways. If i have laid one pre race i tend to like to put in 'keep' bets in to lay the rest of the field at say 1.72 and/or 1.55 for a few quid. You wouldn't believe the amount of times more than 2 horses trade as short as that in a races and how often! But that does depend on how many fast fingered guys there are playing that race as to the volatility of the in running market. The last few days has been brilliant in that regard

why suspend at all and have all these in-play delays?
It's time we had a section titled "high risk Betfair" unmanaged for all markets, a free for all where pro's and amateurs alike can pit their wits against each other....those with the faster feeds may win...but they can also get cleaned out.
Some footy games have 10 second delays now...why?? i much prefer the un-managed markets, but they have now all gone.

I've met track players who literally don't know the difference between a hurdle and a chase. Or wouldn't have a clue what a seller or claimer was or how they worked.
But...im not denying some of them have big b@lls and will stick plenty on at short prices to make a good living.
It's the people laying these players and getting wiped out who need protecting.

If the people laying these players are continually getting wiped out then surely they should have the common sense to stop doing it.
Why should they be protected?

A better idea if they wanted to level the playing field would be to remove the 1 second bet delay for everyone and to place a 3 second bet delay on the accounts of track players and fast pic players.
In the same way bookmakers target winning punters and limit them to pennies, Betfair should take action against those with the unfair advantage over the majority.

People who think that Betfair want it to be fairer need to look at things in a different way.
Imagine Betfair are the local Mafia and the track players are shopkeepers paying protection money to them i.e. up to 60% Premium Charge.

That's true except the mugs do appear to be running out and if you have a "mug" who at least has a chance of winning he will keep churning his money. If the Mug starts with 10k and wins another 10k he keeps playing. The track player wins 10k pays his PC and withdraws the rest never to be seen again.

For people who also don't know The Titanic sunk, the exchange model failed. Commission churn didn't work. Hence Betfair decided to cream off more via Premium Charge and opened a Sportsbook.

be very hard...have to dedicate loads of time watching every race and making notes..then you still have to overcome many many obstacles.

Fair = too much infrastructure and too many staff = less profit from only commission churn
What we have now = more manageable exchange and cream off money via Premium Charge and cross matching bot.
The number of Premium Charge payers is completely irrelevant. If each 1 won as much money as 100 did before, Betfair would not get less protection money. The final Premium Charge player standing can still channel Betfair's cut.
Customers are now directed to the Sportsbook by default... hope this helps...

Rollos post of 1720 is exactly the correct analogy. Instead of solving the problem of users with tech and location advantages BF have decided to take a cut for themselves instead

kublai, Betfair's position is also summed up by them putting money and staff into a Premium Charge Evasion Team. They aren't bothered that some exchange users have an advantage, as long as they get their cut of the "dirty" money!

If I backed a Horse and put up to lay back at 1.13 1.01 etc I want to get matched, I don't care if there's an edge for the guy who matches me. Sometimes they don't win.

i would leave the markets open until the horses have weighed in.........at least then on slower pics you have a chance to react to the chance of a stewards

gubbedbaird it's understandable people who put in short price lays would be against it and im not claiming it's a great idea - but I do think a little innovation from Betfair wouldn't go amiss. And horses would still go short, just your Newton Abbot track player today would have to decide if he wanted to take 1.1 before the final hurdle, not after.

TheFear, Do you have a ledge sticking out under your eyes, that prevents you from seeing what's under your nose?
Betfair get up to 60% from a punter with an advantage.

all they have to do is send the pictures from the course straight to the home users via fibre optic broadband and enable them to use full screen if they want.
if the delay was below 0.2 seconds it would probably not be worth while the additional cost for players to hire boxes on course etc .
I am not sure if betfair want a level playing field , because if everyone was playing off the same speed pics , I think far more would be matched near the end of races

Who knows if they even discuss these things? If RUK can be 1 second behind live how much ££££ required for ATR to do the same?
Rollo, I understand your point but I don't believe the issue is as black and white as you are suggesting. For example, a major faller layer on here apparently doesn't pay PC because his account was a massive loser pre-PC.
