Reads like a cynical attempt to increase their alcohol sales.  Not surprised at anything Chester do to make even more money.

I'd be all for banning it altogether, but to stop people taking refreshment of their own is a disgrace. "Get as plsssed as you like as long as you pay us a fortune for it".

Not a good analogy tbf, foxy. One is about preventing terrorism, the other about forcing people to be ripped off or do without.

Ah ! I agree with saddo actually. All sports events should be teetotal, particularly in the hospitality boxes. I am a regular drinker at night but haven't imbibed alcohol at any sporting event since I was about 20.

Chester Course Enclosure
The Open Course and rules of the Open Course are changing.

From 10th July there will be a new Car Park Picnic Area, which will be separate from the Open Course.

You will be welcome to stay and picnic by your car before entering the Open Course.

Your car park picnic may contain a moderate amount of alcohol, limited to the equivalent of one bottle of wine or two 500ml cans of beer per person.

Any alcohol deemed excessive may be confiscated and disposed of
From 10th July you will no longer be able to bring alcohol onto the Open Course.

You will be welcome to bring food and soft drinks in sealed plastic containers onto the Open Course.

Bag checks will be in operation at the entrance to the open course from the Car Park Picnic Area and at Gates 9 (Nuns Rd) and 10 (Castle Bend).

Chester Race Company will refuse entry to anyone carrying alcohol on foot and reserves the right to ask anyone attempting to bring alcohol onto the open course to leave.

Please act responsibly and be respectful of the rules, these changes aim to ensure the comfort and enjoyment of race goers of all ages.

More information can be found at www.chester-races.com

Something had to be done, groups were bring on large cases of cheap supermarket booze. As said previously there have been brawls on the last two saturdays which the police were called to. This can only discourage the other racegoers.
At the last meeting a group of p***ed youths/men congregated near my joint a greatly affect turnover.

Don't think so whiskyalpha.  That was the attraction of the course enclosure.

£12 to get in ,I am old enough to remember when it was £1.I make you right beatherder. The only attraction of the ring was being allowed to take beer in.You can't see the horses, might as well stay in the boozer over the road and nip over to the wall to watch each race.

25th Jun 2015 from TwitLonger

To avoid any further confusion we would like to clarify that we are not BANNING alcohol.
The Open Course where you park your car and picnic remains unchanged, we are simply limiting the amount of alcohol that can brought in here.
This comes after issues with some people bringing excessive amounts of alcohol onto the Open Course, resulting in anti-social behaviour.
This has nothing to do with increasing revenue, it is to ensure licensing requirements are met and, most importantly, the safety and enjoyment of all racegoers, of all ages is ensured.
There is a new area of the Open Course where you will not be able to bring your own alcohol.
We invite you to continue enjoying race days on the Open Course with your friends and families and thank you for your understanding.

Report georgebakerfanclub June 25, 2015 7:30 PM BST
I've been attending Chester races for the last forty years and I can assure you every year they come up with a scheme for the executive to increase their take. The prices go up every year. Just a few things they have done over the years, they drastically reduced the size of the Dee stand to extend Tatts so they could charge more. The open course used to extend nearly to the winning post now all that area is corporate entertaining, open course customers are at least 2 furlongs from the finish.
They got rid of the tote and introduced Chester Bet. before that you could bet on all days  meetings from the tote windows. The cost of drinks and food is exorbitant, I asked why the beer is so dear and was told it's because of the fees that chester race course charges to the concessionaires. They screw the punter in every way. the standard of racing has not improved and you are seeing smaller and smaller fields as the racing is becoming uncompetitive but as they are only experts on making money not of running a race course.
They're banning bring in alcohol so they can screw more money out of the punters all the other guff is just window dressing to justify it. I believe they screw the bookies as much as the punters. Good old British racing. All IMHO.

Total joke - you cant get into any of the pubs or clubs after a race meeting unless your in a suit; those on the course either drive home (designated driver) or head to the train station.

Chester have just lost themsleves a whole of of business.

What you say about screwing the books is spot on.I've two positions in Tatts.True they are kharzi numbers however once over you could take money out of them & I haven't been since the day of the blocked drains & open sewers. That now must be three or four year ago & I won't be back there again until they do something about the place. It costs an arm & a leg to bet in Tatts yet all the punters go into the centre & to be honest why shouldn't they go into the centre? What is there to keep them in Tatts? There's virtually no seating, getting a drink or food isn't easy to say the least.Chester have got to do something to encourage punters to stay in Tatts yet it seems they aren't bothered.Surely they can see from their own figures how much they are losing due to bookies giving the place a miss,.but it doesn't seem to matter to them.
Report Pinza June 26, 2015 11:40 AM BST
Alcohol and gambling don't mix anyway.
Years ago I found that I was increasing my stakes due to drinking at track.
Nowadays I limit to one pint at track and never bet with Chester Bet.
All my bets are placed with Betfair before I go.

Whilst on the subject I noticed at May meeting that the bookies were offering higher odds in Tatts than the bookies by the White Horse pub area - Newstead Abbey 5/1 in Tatts and 4/1 in other side and S.P return 11/2!!!!!!
Betfair - 6.20 20.00 Back 08-May-15 10:31  104.00
The 4/1 was a rip off.
Report Gordon63 June 26, 2015 11:51 AM BST
many courses don't allow any food or alcohol to be brought in.  chester has gone full steam ahead down the ladies day/nights route and despite all the valid points here, the attendances show no sign of declining, last time i went it was mobbed and avoidng the lager spillage was quite a challenge!  just goes to show that the make up of crowds at these meetings are there to be 'entertained' at any cost and the odd % here or there or the quality of racing doesn't make slightest bit of difference. i'm against most of these changes - and Chester isn't unique - but the business model is working for some, for now at least

I don't know what the big deal, hand wringing nonsense there all is about binge drinking. Allow me to quote an extract (in our English) from a letter sent from the French Ambassador to the Court of St James when reporting back to Paris.

"The English are a mongrel race, given over to drinking and debauchery, fighting in the streets and generally misbehaving. The situation is so bad that on their day off they are usually to be found drunk and guttered" (This last word means being found prone and unable to move, in the gutter).

This letter was sent in 1693.

Just putting all this hand wringing in perspective.
Report Gordon63 June 26, 2015 2:47 PM BST
yes agreed but reasonable (I think) to expect a day at the races (considering you are paying a not insignificant amount to enter) to be a somewhat different scene
