This has to be the most unappealing there has been in living memory...so it's a fantastic opportunity for a potential late developing 3yo or an improving older horse to be supplemented and have a shot as the 4/1 fav Snow Sky is nothing to fear - he'll do well to win a group one in the future as he had the run of the race today and will be over-rated on that performance.

He only scraped home from a penalised Brown Panther at Chester...that extra 5lb made all the difference.
When was the last time a handicap winner was third in the ante-post market?

There are presently 31 entries and NOTHING stands out:

Where are all the Jáp horses? Surprised It's there for the taking!
A group one pot for a race that in reality is only group two.

Connections of the top 10f horses MUST have a rethink here as it might even turn into a great race if they pull their fingers out.
Quality performers like The Great Gatsby, Free Eagle, New Bay & California Closets could be considered. The foreign challenge should well be spicing this up a bit and wouldn't you think Coolmore would be able to rustle something up and have a go?

There is tremendous presige in winning a race like this...like the Arc it's like a group one A+ and in all likelihood, it's going to be won by a bum - what a waste!

The prices on Betfair are a bit of a clue - I don't think I'd be exaggerating in saying Jack Hobbs (especially after winning at The Curragh) would be odds-on if he lined up against that lot...not to mention Golden Horn who'd be a Nashwan-esque 1/5 in my opinion!

Navel i think he may have been mocking what is probably an auto correct for California Chrome.

I've just realised what he's said and it's my fault for thinking out loud Blush

That auto correct things is grey, don't you think?
Report .Fidway. June 21, 2015 5:37 PM BST
the 1986 running of the race contained

Dancing Brave
Shardari
Triptych
Shahrastni
Petoski
Dihistan
Supreme Leader.

Triptych started 25/1 for the race. Would be odds on for this years running

The GREY Gatsby

Top 2 rated - sorry squire Blush

Fid - you could say the same about horses that've ran great races in 5th or 6th places in many years! That's how bad this renewal is.

1987 renewals betting

Reference Point 11/10 fav
Celestial Storm 5/1
Triptych 5/1
Unite 13/2
Sir Harry Lewis 10/1
Acatenango 18/1
Moon Madness 25/1
Bourbon Girl 40/1
Tony Bin 100/1

Take it the mid 80s ws a golden era for top class horses.
Report cardifffc June 21, 2015 6:18 PM BST
tony bin 100\1.........was that the year he won the arc
Report .Fidway. June 21, 2015 6:22 PM BST
Tony Bin won the Arc the year after. he was also 3rd in the 1988 version of the king george behind Mtoto and Unfuwain
Report Navel-Gazer June 21, 2015 6:38 PM BST
Tony Bin was 2nd to Trempolino in the Arc that season (1987) he was a 100/1 poke against Reference Point.

I think you can safely put a line through the performances of both Eagle Top and Postponed yesterday. Both pulled and failed to settle due to lack of pace, indeed I think Eagle Top's finishing position can be significantly marked up. Given a decent pace I think he's definitely the one to beat, although whether Gosden will run him there with Jack Hobbs looking a likely runner would put me off having an antepost bet

I think the 73 renewal had the best in depth field.
1 Dahlia-won again in 74.
2 Rheingold-2nd btn Sh/hd in 72 Derby and had won 4 on the trot before this race, the John porter,Prix Ganay,Hardwick and GP de Saint Cloud. Won the Arc de Triomphe afterwards!
3 Our Mirage-winner of the Prix de la Salamander as a 2 yo.
4 Weavers Hall-Irish Derby winner.
5 Parnell-2nd to Brigadier Gerard in this race in 72.
6 Card King
7 Scottish Rifle-Won the Eclipse race before.
11 Roberto-Won 72 Derby and only horse to beat Brigadier Gerard in BH Gold Cup and won the Coronation Cup at Epsom by 6 lengths prior to this race.
Doesn't get better than that imo, this years rather pales into insignificance in comparison.
By the way Dahlia hacked up by 6 lengths!
Report cardifffc June 22, 2015 12:15 PM BST
did triptych or dahlia produce anything good as a broodmare
Report foxy June 22, 2015 12:55 PM BST
Cardiff

triptych didn't get much of a chance she was killed by a tractor quite early in her breeding career.
Report foxy June 22, 2015 2:35 PM BST
its worth remembering harbinger was only a gr 2 horse winning the hardwicke before he put up an incredible performance in the king George.
Report duffy June 22, 2015 2:41 PM BST
Yeah, we often criticise the poor state of the sprinting division but the middle distance brigade can't seem to produce any depth these days either...that list for a king George is an absolute shocking state.
