This race actually peaked twenty years ago, when it was run at the Ebor meeting. In 1995, it paid over £14,000 to the winner, who to nobody's surprise, was trained by Jack Berry.
This running isn't shown as a 'Plus 10' race in the program book.

There's been a Rous Seller every year at York for as long as I've been in the game, and long before as well. It was a feature of the Ebor meeting throughout the 20th century, but was moved to this date in 2000 and has been run here since, apart from one switch to July in 2005.
I have a 1913 form book and there was a Rous 2-y-old Selling Stakes over 5F at the Ebor meeting back then, worth £196 and run 35 minutes before the Ebor. The Rous just hasn't done as well as the other selling races at that meeting, which were called Nunthorpe and Lowther.

This race used to be known as the Rous Selling Stakes - and, as The Anorak says - used to be run at the Ebor meeting.
In 1989 the race was worth £8220 to the winner. The result was a, two Heads, three-way Photo between Super One, Beachy Glen, and Final Shot.
Alex Bird claimed the 3rd horse, Final Shot, the 2/1 Fav, on behalf of a bloke who was either a second-hand car dealer, or scrap-man ... whatever, it was an unlikely association.
They left the horse with trainer Peter Easterby - and the next year Final Shot won the Ayr Gold Cup, at 12/1, ridden by John Lowe, carrying 8st 2lbs.
The Ayr Gold Cup was run on the Friday of the Western Meetng - as was usual in those days.
