i knew michael quite well about 20 years ago and he was a lovely bloke then but i am afraid his comment about women not being able to ride is clearly wrong though i do wonder if it was said tongue in cheek as he was always a bit of a joker.

There was nothing wrong with him as a jockey ability wise, as 500 or so winners and multiple group race wins would suggest, with maybe only he seemed a bit tall and might have struggled to do the weights without it taking it out of him too much.

It's a storm in a teacup anyway (or at least it should be) but if you only read him use those words or watch him do so isolated from what else he said then that's one thing but he did so with a deliberately deadpan delivery in a joust or good humoured verbal sparring with Katie Walsh in response to something pro-women she said once he had initially praised women jockeys for their attitude.

I'm just a little disappointed he even apologised (although get why he did) and too many people these days get so easily offended because they choose to be and because they can.

Of course not.

These feminists are trying to fight fire with fire, they want equality where and when it suits them, ie, to be treated as equal without having to act equal.

Human males in general are physically stronger than human females, thats not a derogatory statement, its a simple fact of nature. Racing is a rare sport where they compete against each other for obvious reasons, its possible because 90% is horse, and a jockeys brain is just as important, if not more so, than physical strength.

While I dont agree with the statement that women cant ride, no one should be sacked over it and perhaps if equality is what you are after, you should be responding to such statements as would those you desire to be seen as equal to. In this case by either laughing it off or just ignoring it for the inconsequential opinion of one man that it is.

Claire Balding will have something to say.  Perhaps she can make a new series out of this.

Well here's one who is firmly in his corner, I can't stand the sight of women jockeys, and avoid them as much as possible . The very odd time I have no choice but to back them but its usually a bumper, and at that it will be a lady riders one normally. Wouldn't have the likes of Turner , Gannon on my mind, because not alone are they not up to the standard I would require, I quite dislike them as well. You'd swear they were top riders if you were listening to them 2 yokes , well they aren't and there's no woman riding who isn't vastly inferior to even average male riders. If I ever get a tip for a horse and it happens to be ridden by Lucy Alexander , Cathy Gannon, Hayley Turner , Charlotte Jenner etc etc, I just simply ignore it.

Getting back to Tebbutt, surely the best parallel is with a driving instructor who said women can't drive. He needs to convince his employers that he's been stitched up in the television company's editing suite.

Yes to get back to Tebbutt is to remind us of a jockey to avoid in his riding days. Both Gannon and Turner were superior.

What about offering all female jockeys a 3 lbs allowance?

That would give them more opportunites, which is the main thing they b1tch about (with some justification).

Perhaps they could be given an option to voluntarily relinquish it, on becoming professional, if they consider it an insult to their gender.

Gannon isnt superior to many, now i couldnt comment on Tebbutt, but if he was inferior to Gannon, how the hell could he be considered as a coach.

A good women jockey will get a Group race ride if she is equal to or better than the top male jockeys.
Poor male jockeys don't get Group race rides.  Poor female jockeys don't get Group race rides.
This is a money business, and money goes where it can be placed to advantage.
The industry can offer jockeys a few starting rides at the lowest levels.  Progress depends on ability and work.

@kincsem is right that basically it comes down to the best jockeys getting the best rides. There might be a slight quibble that in general, reputation lags performance, especially on the way down.

there is strong evidence out there for that imo
if you dig deep enough you will find the reverse is also true of jockeys mid-late 20s
the average trend of course, there will be plenty of exceptions

Unbelievable and not true. Tebbutt seems to have said, as reported in the Post, that "they [women] still can't ride". He does not deny saying it but claims his words have been taken out of context, which they probably have.

Once again I concur wonder.  Lucy has been downright average since she lost her claim, and that is re the horses she manages to stay on!

Couldn't the same be said for Richard Perham?

Of course males jockeys are generally strong than females but from some of the posts above, you would think strength was the only thing needed to win a race. If it was all as basic as that then no female jockey would ever win any races, let alone Gr1s or 100 winners in a calendar year.

And Michael Tebbutt actually said both things, that women can't ride and that men are stronger. He obviously was being flippant with the first though and knows they can. He praised women jockeys for "going the extra yard and putting more time in" to which Katie Walsh replied something like "that's women for you" with him immediately replying in a deadpan manner, "still can't ride though."

Later on Katie asked him what are the major differences between male and female jockeys and he said strength. She then asked something like if you had a male with strength and a female with less strength but a better brain then what would you do, to which he mischievously replied "you take the brain out of the female and put it in the male" causing Katie to burst out laughing.
