I mourn the first Wed in June due to the Derby not being run. John Cobb in the RP remembers 1968 Sir Ivor in the afternoon and Man U in the evening. It was the ultimate sporting day with only the 2 highlights.
A day off work as always on Derby day. This Sat the Derby will be well down the pecking order with Messi and co dominating the back pages and several other sports cricket tennis rugby etc. to be included.
The atmosphere on a Wed Derby was electric regardless if you go or watched it on the BBC who dedicated the afternoon to the race which was THE EVENT (without the constant bookie adverts) rather than whats on offer on any Sat.

rayman you're obviously an old fogey reactionary ...as of course am I. Your recollection of the build up and atmosphere of the Derby back in the days of Sir Ivor,Royal Palace,Nijinsky et al is spot on. Today the build up is to all intent and purposes non existent and the race itself has been so diluted as far as the public is concerned that it's almost just another race.

the only hope this years race has of making any significant impact on the sunday papers or saturday news bulletins is if racings favourite coke sniffing italian rides the winner unfortunately
