....E.W. bets on both Louis The Pious 13.45 York & Highland Acclaim 16.30 Newmarket. Both 20-1 generally BOG + a small E.W. double.
Backing drifters in the betting is not in everyone's usual betting strategies, but having watched a couple of David O'Meara's drift this morning I've been tempted in for a few small wagers.
Louis the Pious has developed into a solid handicapper, holding his form well in some well contested class 2 events during his career to date, winning the Ayr Gold Cup along with the Buckingham Palace being the highlights of last season/career. He did get an adjusted BHA mark of 112 for winning the Ayr show piece, subsequently going on to run well in group company immediately after having limited options off that type of mark of where he could be placed. Today he shoulders top weight in a class he is more synonymous with, he also has an additional 3lbs lightened off that mark in the form of Shirley Birkett's claim. I'm sure anyone siding with this horse today would have wanted to have seen more than he offered 3 weeks ago in the conditions race he ran in, but in fairness that race was only a 4 runner affair and it was in no way ran to suit his style, that along with fact it was his first run back on soft ground enough for me to forgive that run. He will need a personal best today to take this, but also needed a personal best to win both those races above and found the improvement to do so. His record over 7F is only a fair one, but last season did start off over 6 before running well over this step up in trip and I'm sure the way the race will develop is sure to suit. There are a few within the field that look sure to tow them along at a good gallop, hopefully Louis The Pious will be seen in a better light at today's conclusion, 20-1 Imo too big for an established class 2 performer regardless of the weight.
Despite plenty of runners in the North David O'Meara sends a sole raider to Newmarket, like Louis The Pious Highland Acclaim has also been burdened with top weight. He is another that you would have liked to have seen more from on his seasonal reappearance, but missing the kick then pulling like a train for two furlongs in a Victoria Cup on seasonal bow is not going to cut you much ice, he was only ever going to be an also ran and not unduly punished on that comeback run as a result. He is another who established himself last season to be a proven class 2 handicapper over 6F, and now returns to that trip on a track that suits his style very well. He took in a couple of Tattersall million races at Newmarket as a 2yrold and 3ryold, despite looking outclassed in both of those heats as a 66 & 100-1 shot Imo outran those odds considerably, those both over today's trip of 6F. His effort last summer on course in June was poor, but that over 7F and can be better judged from his performance back at 6F late August , where he ran on strongly to run out a ready winner of a class 3 contest, backing that up the following Saturday off his revised mark in a Shergar Cup Race. He still has the scope and potential to take forward last seasons progression in to his current one, with his current price tag on offer of 20-1 Imo simply too big not to have an interest of some sort.
