Most of them are pretty ueless just steer clear of porn sites and use no script and cc cleaner
along with malwarebytes and AVG never had a problem but mates with paid Anti Virus have had allsorts
but safe surfing is really the answer..

Scan it while you're asleep.

You can get  AVG , the full package free  if you download it as a torrent, infact you can get anything, all you need is a bit torrent client like U TORRENT... no need to but anything,

http://www.utorrent.com/

Then for all torrent downloads:-

http://katproxy.com/
Report koikeeper May 27, 2015 10:12 AM BST
I would also use this:-

http://download.cnet.com/AdwCleaner/3000-7786_4-75851221.html

you will be surprised how quick your lap top will run after using it.

You can get legit (I think!) full package McAfee on ebay, usually a few of them on there and reasonably priced, just buy the download link, no DVD/discs required, they email you all the details. I've used them the past 3-4 years with no problems... famous last words ;-)
Report ged May 27, 2015 10:48 AM BST
Malwarebytes premium probably the best you can get if you want to pay.

If you want free, then get Malwarebytes free as a scanner (only), and Avira as anti-virus (only). Recent Windows provide a firewall so you don't need to buy one.
Report ged May 27, 2015 10:59 AM BST
If you go free, or do without Malwarebytes premium, I would also suggest downloading Cryptoprevent from Foolish It (don't let the name put you off) - it's free if you manually update -  to protect yourself from Cryptolocker - because if you get that one, you are totally and completely f*cked. Most antivirus software will not prevent you from getting Cryptolocker, but Cryptoprevent will. You may need to 'whitelist' it if your antivirus scanner flags it up (Malwarebytes scanner will, for instance, flag up Cryptoprevent as potentially dodgy - but it's not - it's fine, and just needs to be whitelisted).

hi mate, you shouldn't have to spend anything as there are multiple competent programs out there, for a Windows vista/7/8 setup i'd recommend & use myself:

1) Microsoft Security Essentials (Free) - standard viruses, worms, trojans, rootkits etc.
2) MalwareBytes ('For Home Only' Free) - secondary scan for malware etc.
3) CCleaner (Free version is fine) - "CCleaner is Disk Cleanup On Steroids" easy to get rid of all your temp/hidden/cached files etc being wasted on your pc

Run MSE / Malwarebytes overnight if your pc specs aren't great
You should scan if either something seems up or it's been over a month since your last full scan

AVG is decent too but can be heavy on usage when idle etc. so that's why i'd recommend MSE but if you wanted you could replace, AVG Free is also fine

so MSE/AVG should be open in your icon tray for day-to-day use and 2&3 are programs that won't be on in the background and you will have to manually run them periodically if you want to scan/cleanup

Microsoft Security Essentials - free, updates regularly, doesn't pester you to pay for something every 3 months.

What Windows operating system are you using?

As ged says - Recent Windows Operating Systems HAVE a built-in Firewall -
You do not need any Ant-Virus that ALSO contains a Built-In Firewall - as they will conflict with each other - and S L O W down your computer.

As others have posted - you do NOT need to BUY anything.

As eightbo posts  -

Microsoft Security Essentials is FREE - and probably the best.
Malwarebytes (Free version) - SuperantiSyware(Free) - or Spybot Searech&Destroy(Free) will scan for any crap.

CCleaner (Free) - do a sweep with that BEFORE you start each day's session - and you have a fresh start, and will run quicker.

But - the Best Tip is - and it is Free.

In your Windows Browser(s) Settings - BLOCK Third-Party Cookies

THAT will STOP ANY 'Tracking Cookies (the major form of Malware) getting ONTO your computer, in the first place.

Even Malwarebytes then finds NOTHING untoward.

Prevention being better than cure.

Report homefortea May 27, 2015 8:16 PM BST
Feck me bluenose7 you have jumped in front of me...

If you want to browse the internet and not be traced then get a chromebook..

Ideal for the punter that gets banned because his computer is infected with cookies from the alleged "Bookmakers"...

I hate samsung so give that a swerve but try asus..

Have had one for about a year cost about £200 fires up straight away and is light enough for the rucksack and I walk at least 10 miles every day.

Use it as a "guest" so every time you switch it off your browsing history is erased..

DOWNSIDE it only supports chromebook and so you cannot watch Sky on the go..

No anti virus needed.
Report metro john May 27, 2015 8:53 PM BST
I would not pay for Anti virus try this http://www.360totalsecurity.com/   with your windows Defender(perfectly good firewall), Comodo Firewall is great and runs with Wibdows defender ok(no conflict), but customize your install , you don't need Geek, browser , dsn server, just untick boxes. 360 got 5 engines running, a excellent patcher if you have to refresh your pc, so getting those windows updates quicker(good program). Better than most paid when combined.
Report metro john May 27, 2015 8:58 PM BST
oh yes, on 360, go too virus scan and tick Bitdefender and Avira download takes a couple of mins, but excellent defense, you wont need malwarebytes. give it a try, you will like.
