Had a day out yesterday to the afternoon jump fixture at Utoxeter . Reasonable attendance -nothing special . But I counted a total of 61 Bookmakers with working pitches . How many could have made a profit ? The crowd was mainly there to show off swanky clothes and drink into oblivion . I couldnt see hardly any proper activity in the two betting rings . It looked like women having £2 ew and the guys having fivers and tenners on . Surely those sort of bets don,t equate to a profitable days trading with average results ? So why did so many Bookies turn up and thus spread the jam so thinly ?
Any Bookies who attended could perhaps enlighten me ?
Perhaps with a few facts and figures about bets struck and turnover ?

YES - you guessed right .Virtually all showing the same prices all the time . Does no one take a VIEW on a race anymore ?

Homefortea.
FREE ADMISSION ? NO !
Tatts admission was £20 and it was £25 for the so called Premium experience . Expensive day out for two people with a bite to eat and drinks .
But it looked like 90% of the crowd weren,t racing people .
In the 3 mile race the crowd "cheered home the winner!-not realizing there was another circuit to go !

all betting to about 108% or less each race..how most expect to win baffles me.

and for the record I took £ 3201 all day from 642 bets taken [ average bet less than a fiver ]

and it will only get worse as the xs go one way while the take stays the same/declines..... it's not as if the weather was that good that they  could all say they stood out in the sun and got a tan

I stopped going to The July Course because of the concert nights on Fridays, 85% of the people completely pis$ed up and no interest in the racing whatsoever.

Why do ALL bookies ALL go the same price ALL the time.....is it fear that ALL the other bookies will just try and fry them as they are ALL just commission agents?

Surely, the best thing for the ring, books wise, would be to disconnect from the infernal machine and work pitches like you used to?
By:

When: 26 May 15 00:06
if only they could , big issue , but 95% wouldn't be able to work.
if we could go back to how it used to be we would all bet to 120% or bigger and there would be room for one or two to take a chance with one and still have a good percentage on the board.
most these days just go one tick below the exchange price and go home happily with the minimum wage if they're lucky

ADGE -it seems incredible you only took on average only just over £400 a race and that the average bet was a fiver !
Whats the game coming to ?
Just out of interest what was the BIGGEST bet you took on the days seven races ?
When speaking to other Bookies during the racing was your turnover about the same as the others ?

do we ever discuss other peoples occupations on this forum ?

I presume everybody goes out to make a living yet you never get the ins and outs of what anybody else does,i do realise there are many clever t...s on this forum who just get a fortune out of betting exchanges but there must be the odd one who is self employed.

Adge, thanks for the reply. What I can't understand (seriously) is why so many therefore are in attendance. Surely by the laws of economics or even nature, only the fittest should survive and others should pack in as they can't make it pay?

there wasn't a big bet DIK. mostly sundays are a family day out , not for the betting people. as you say very few seemed to be betting which is normal for sundays , although uttoxeter's idea of a family fun day is to charge £20 for tatts and £10 for the centre.
the reason that there appear to be more bookmakers attending is false though. what is happening is that bookmakers are buying three pitches in the rings , linking them together and putting just one staff on each joint. the trend seems to be that achieving minimum wage is the way forward

Adge is that a dig?  I'm glad I'm a long way from the minimum....my gripe is the select band of 3 books who consistently ring wreck in no hope whatsoever of achieving the minimum wage.for themselves or for others around them...I just hope sooner rather than later they realise that their business model doesn't really fit.

I went to Lingfield yesterday for a day out and in the 15.40 race which was a terribly fiendish 14 runner handicap, every single book (I think there were 14 standing) had the same price for each runner. That was par for the course all day. I watched the market on course and on here like a hawk and prices were being chopped continuously when they hadn't taken a farthing.

The first race was a prime example, the Haggas horse Tutu Nguru was sent off at 5/6 from evens, touched 4/5 and I never saw a shekel for it. Evens was showing freely but was chopped without a bet being struck.

COME RACING !
