Dont go would be my advice, its an absolute kip, with rubbish racing, rubbish horses, rubbish jockeys, rubbish trainers. And its a s bennt as a two bob note to make it even worse. The town is a dive as well

the first poster is correct...faded grandeur ...it is busy on Ayr gold cup and Scottish grand national days but otherwise you dodge the tumbleweed...not even a lively betting market but the on course guys should accommodate you...

the Beresford at top of town is good for food and the pub next door does a good breakfast and free wi fi...

the best walk is from the train station to the course but there is dam and bell isle parks nearby..

further out you have coastal walks  and Robert Burns cottage the delights of butlins at ayr..with a bevy of single parents on holidays for a fiver deals from the Sun looking for the boaby which is a Scottish slang term for Robert

so if you bump into one of those orange skinned darlings and wish company to go on a cultural visit to Burns cottage tell her your looking for the boaby....

it's fallen down the pecking order from no 1 in scotland (30 yrs ago) to no 5 behind musselburgh, perth, hamilton, kelso (in that order for me).

my pre-racing drink is usually in rabbie burns (sometimes the tam o'shanter which is more expensive but does have bar food)..the betting market can be quite lively although IMO it's been diluted too much by having some bookies indoors (on ground floor) and by the parade ring, a far cry when matt mccormack took the mighty Horage to Ayr for it's first ever run cause he said it was the best course in the country to get a bet on!

ayr as a town has seen better days but that goes for most of the seaside towns around the entire UK, high streets full of greggs, poundlands, charity shops and pay day loans etc etc

The best pub for food and drink by far is the the Ring of feathers.

Full of Scots which is reason itself not to go anywhere near it. Ghastly place.

I remember when the Scots used to invade Whitley Bay for two weeks in June. That was when the bars opened 12-3 & 7-10.30, they would still get P***** and be up for a scrap, happy days.

The description of Ayr is replicated in Whitley Bay, a sad state of affairs.Plain

Not sure Pirate Petes or Kidz Play are ideal unless you want to end up on a register.

Ayr has indeed seen better days but it's no worse than most places. Town centres everywhere are fkd.

It has plenty of good places to eat so that's what I would do. Forget going for a walk, it's freezing atm
