Happy to post it again. Presumably, if it was untrue, Tommo would have sued by now. I was given Matthew Norman's book - You Cannot Be Serious: The 101 Most Infuriating Things In Sport - for Christmas and it contained a story about Thompson that I hadn't heard previously. Channel 4 Racing stalwart John Tyrrel was Norman's father-in-law and died in Newmarket in 1995: "When he died...Tommo raced to the house to offer condolences, and to beg JT's widow to delay the funeral for more than a week, until the first day on which he could be certain to attend. This, at some inconvenience, she duly did. The mystery of Tommo's non-appearance at the church was not resolved until hours after the service, when my brother-in-law and I chose to pay our most private respects by spending an hour in a bookmaker's in Newmarket High Street. Any plans to make a missing person's report and ask the police to put out an All Points Bulletin for a Caucasian male, about forty-five years old, with an infuriating smirk were happily forestalled when a familiar voice drifted out of the speakers. Tommo, having demanded the postponement of the funeral to a time convenient to himself had waged a fierce internal battle and then decided to earn a few bob from commentating on behalf of the bookies' satellite service SIS at an exceedingly minor meeting at Uttoxeter." What Norman doesn't mention but I definitely recall is that not long previously Tyrrel had taken the trouble to write to the Post in defence of Thompson whose grating manner had attracted a lot of criticism - so, what's new? - and Tyrrel had valiantly fought his corner. |

9.00am Speak with Pacing Rost, regarding our Joint venture of free ad’s and misleading headlines for next day’s print. 9.30am Leave for work at the Total Garage, arrive 9.40am, ensure I damage a few pies so I can have proper breakfast! 11.00am Finish work great day, 2 ginsters, and a damaged carton of orange all for £1 11.10am Back home again, take a call from my great friend Sir Henry , I answer Henry realises he has the wrong number and put the phone down, will add to my hotline that I have spoken with today anyway! 11.15am Check the post, fantastic news, letter from the Pacing Rost with cheque attached £7.20 as part payment from our JV tipping services (what a great day so far) 11.30am put the bins out, see Frankie say hello Get ignored! 11.35am See Frank Spencer out with his kids, say hello, Frank covers kids faces and I get ignored ! 11.40am In the car, off to commentate at Huntingdon can’t wait 11.45am just going out of Newmarket see Sir Michael Snout, give him a wave, get ignored ! 12.30pm well into my 25mile journey, happily listening to my favourite group FREE ! alright now blaring out of the car 1.15pm arrive at huntingdon, got all I need with me, The Sun, Binoculars, flask and of course my bucket for all the racegoers to place their contact details in so I can mail them about my tipping service 1.20pm In press room with Fraud Duval can’t understand what he is saying due to the amount of free food he has stuffed in his face, noticed a ham sandwich hanging out of his pocket as well, make myself a tea, then fill my flask up ! 1.40pm walk to the commentary box, say hello to A.P Get ignored ! 1.41pm study the colours for the 2.00pm race 1.41.07sec finished studying the colours, go outside commentary box with bucket 1.42pm Bump into Ladbroke rep, ask if he can put a word in for me to open some shops Get Ignored. 1.50pm Get ready to call the 3 runners going down to the start of this Nov hurdle or is it a chase, can’t remember I will wait until they jump off to be sure. 2.00pm and we are racing 2.05pm a bit embarrassed I missed one of the horses falling at the 3rd 2.06pm downstairs signing autographs at a £1 a shot, bucket in one hand, pen in other. 2.20pm try to get a quick word with P.Nicholls Get Ignored! 2.21pm Back in box just time to update my hotline with some more fake news 2.36pm second race done and dusted had to use my cliché “that’s one for the judge” although the winner won by 3L 2.40pm Pop by the weighing room found out there are some sandwiches still there, too late I see Duval beaten me to it again 2.47pm get accosted by a woman complaining about my tips, I state that in the T&C’s you will not get a refund of any kind, feel a bit sorry for her as she is my mother! 2.49pm Close call charity NSPPC are here hanging around near the commentary box steps, so rush past to avoid putting in (felt a cold sweat coming on there for a moment) 4.45pm all racing finished, said my apologies to all for the poor calling today, worse one being the 4.00pm got John Ferguson colours (Jet Black) mixed up with Trevor Hemmings (Green/white) 5.10pm Standing by the gate bucket at the ready trying to collect e-mails addresses, and phone numbers 5.25pm Sitting in the car park do a reserve charge call to the Pacing Rost to discuss tomorrow advert I suggest we say “Tommo’s was on fire yesterday 10/1 8/1 winners, when in fact I tipped 5 losers at 4/11, 4/9, 1/2, 4/5, 10/11, PR agree so ad done great. 6.30pm arrive home, check for messages on my answer phone “You have no new messages” so no change there. 6.35pm Get a call from Michael Ball top HQ trainer, wondering if I fill in tonight, at his charity event, in aid of injured owners fund, I said I will gladly do it for £750, bell is insistent it is for charity so we agree on £740 +food +expenses 7.30pm Showered and drenched in Brut aftershave (keeps for years) I’m off to the gig. 8.00pm Arrive at the gig, a little bit annoyed Ball won’t pay me up front or in cash, still reluctantly I do it i’m a good guy. 11.15pm Fantastic Night, they raise £25,000 less my £740+food+expenses so around £22,000 11.45pm arrive home, and I’m not even tired, managed to get hold of tomorrows runners, so decide to put on Hotline early, can’t make my mind how many selections 2,3,4 no I place 10 on there. 1.15am take a swig from the free champers I got from the gig, thinking of heading to bed 1.30am forgot to look at my bank statements so go online. 1.55am finally off to bed a happy man, do it all over again tomorrow so need to get my 1 hour 50 minutes sleep in. |

Enjoyed reading that Birkdale....Tommo is quite clearly the most wonderful coooont you could ever meet, never liked him before, like him even less having read this thread.

So many stories about his devious schemes.
There's the infamous bucket scam, the incident with Hugo Palmer when the BHA got involved, telling callers to his hotline @£1.53pm that he was on the gallops getting info. from trainers when he was really on a Mediterranean cruise etc... etc.... And new this year .... the "executive" bucket scam involving corporate guests in marquees at the main meetings. The list goes on. |
