I had supper over the weekend with my friend who was re-elected as MP for a city in the south of England. Although he was a reasonably safe bet to hold on to his seat, he told me that had he not won then he would have been given a lump sum of around £30,000 to help him move on with his life. The same applies to all MPs not re-elected. I didn't know that. They can also claim up to £57,000 to 'wind down' their position.
