Report Mr Spock • February 22, 2015 6:01 PM GMT
The Stewards held an enquiry into the running and riding of SIROP DE MENTHE (FR), ridden by Lucy Gardner, and trained by Susan Gardner, which was not asked for any effort on the run in before finishing second, beaten 4 ½ lengths for first place. They interviewed the rider and the trainer and heard a report from the Veterinary Officer. The rider stated that she had mistaken the race distance, thinking she had another circuit to go before the finish and therefore she had not ridden the gelding out. Having heard her evidence and viewed recordings of the race the Stewards found the rider in breach of Rule (B)59.3.2.2. They suspended her for 14 days as follows: Sunday 8, Monday 9, Tuesday 10, Wednesday 11, Thursday 12, Friday 13, Saturday 14, Sunday 15, Monday 16, Tuesday 17, Wednesday 18, Thursday 19, Friday 20 and Saturday 21 March 2015.

Report Big muff • February 22, 2015 7:05 PM GMT
14 days is absolutely disgusting, error or not. Like a previous poster has said she'll probably have very few rides within this time so where is the punishment? Punters will have lost money on this incident......they are the ones that have been punished not the jockey.
Surely a minimum 6 months ban would have been more suitable in this instance.(Proportionate to the amount of potential rides~).
Surely this leaves the door wide open to any possible future incidents, ie lay your horse, put a claimer on with the instruction to ride your race and if your in with a winning just sit still and when questioned say that you thought there was another circuit?

one hypothetical sideline (to me anyhow) is that if the winner hadnt been able to get past on the run-in, bearing in mind no other horse did, there would have been the bizarre spectacle of the jockey setting off for another circuit having already won the race. If that had happened, no doubt the stewards would have wanted a word about it, and would they have still banned her for misjudging the number of circuits, or would they have let it go as an incidental irrelevance cos shed won the race ??

i assume this gang threatened the entire field to make sure Very Noble won, as the winner was strong in the market and it wasnt just a lay of her horse. the rest of course did a better job than Lucy, who thought she would be okay sitting in front and not moving till the race was finished. no way would those actions be suspicious in her opinion.

a mental aberration, no more or no less, in my opinion of course. will be the first to come on here and say i was wrong when the real story breaks in the press.

It is a bizarre incident to say the least. What was Lucy thinking? How could she not have sensed the other jockeys around her riding out a finish?

If this was a genuine mistake then she must be feeling dreadful about it. I do feel sorry for her. Imagine having to walk back in after that?

My advice to her would be that one day she won't be feeling so bad about this so why not start feeling not so bad about it right now Happy

I feel for anyone who backed the horse, too. They have every right to be very cross about this.

A very unfortunate event but worse things happen.

I seriously doubt that she miscalculated. It was obvious that the eventual winner was being ridden in earnest. She could see that this WAS the end of the race! Her reaction on passing the line was NOT that of someone expecting another circuit. We have seen jockeys miscalculate in the past and this did not resemble such occurrences IMO.I reckon that the disappearance of the likely winner made losing this race a tougher prospect. Particularly on a horse that was cruising along regardless of the pilot. Barry Brogan at least leapt off one that was left in a similar situation.

Of 83 rides in the last 12 months 77 have been for Mrs Gardner (presumably her mum).

That tells you what high regard she is held in as a rider by the training fraternity!

The BHA should revoke her license and issue her with an amateur rider's license!

It's win two races ago was over same trip ,at Plumpton.

Ran 3f.further yesterday having been entered for today's race at Plumpton back to 16f.

2/1 fav at moment.

Whether the ride yesterday was a genuine mistake or not and no matter how ethically upstanding the trainer and connections might be,surely

this scenario brings racing into disrepute.

Oh but don't be concerned. The BHA is spending millions on 'integrity',so the 'best racing in the World' is safe from trainers doing

whatever it takes (within the rules of course) to get their runners' handicap marks down to a point where they can take full advantage.

As long as bookies and the 'Old Guard' have their way handicaps will be the mainstay of British racing and there will never be an end to

countless daily non-triers.
