great chance then to go tote only

Apparently a similar story with Towcester dogs. Both in the middle of nowhere with no chance of getting there by car and both offering poor viewing for spectators.

By:
"other than by car" I meant

By:
no such thing now as 'bookmakers'...commission agents
|
|

Went last thursday, had good afternoon. As it is owned by betfred surely they are not too bothered with lack of bookmakers. There are betfred betting outlets everywhere so just bet with them. I had a few bets with the bookies outside but they only gave the same prices as the bookies anyway.

not quite true; there were only ever 8 books on the list with a reserve list of 8 .this does not add up to 16 books.for a trial period (I believe to be until end of march only}there will be 4 books in attendance on a rota basis with the reserve list not being used for the trial period .I can confirm business has been light however it is certainly no worse than anywhere else midweek for the time of yr.also the attendances have been pretty good 1500/2000 most meetings thus far.the majority of the public it is true have been keeping inside the grandstand and not venturing outside to bet with the books.mind you can hardly blame them this past 3/4 wks its been that f****** cold a polar bear was seen in the carpark last wk !!

By:
That wasn't a polar bear, that was Stephen Little in his coat.!

Flash depends how you interpret situation, last week they could call on 16 bookmakers this week decide they only want 4, not sure about poor this time of year, Kempton/Lingfield turnover Ok
|
|
By:
You need well known bookies to liven the place up, and lay a bet, they help Bring in the customers, Barry dennis, Starsports, and Gary Wiltshire, people love the banter as well....but then again, Baldie the welcher isn't a bookmaker
|
|
By:
barry; how many books attending midwk lingfield/Kempton was told 2 in tatts midwk lingfield Kempton none .and poss 4/5 on the rails.generaly speaking thebooks I talk to say business is pretty dire everywhere at the mo and not great on sats either anyway I think its fair to say everywhere improves I believe from the craven meeting onwards
|
|
By:
get corals on course, haven't they recently claimed they will take bigger bets
,they will liven the ring up |
|
By:
AW racing in the UK was not created by public demand but by some
other forces. |
|
By:
Flash, if the 4 are lads,w hill betfred plus 1 is that healthy for SP
|
|
By:
rota does not allow there to be more than "2 highstreet firms" in attendance at any meeting for the trial period . anyway as I see it it is still very much a learning curve for the management and all concerned and though it may be quietish for the foreseeable and maybe for the first 12/18 mnths I believe longterm it will be a success.
|
|
By:
Good luck flash at least you will lay to your opinion and that is like a breath of fresh air.

MAYBEE JUST LIKE PLUMPTON THE BOOKMAKERS AND THE BETTING RING MANAGER AT CHELMSFORD HAVE (AND IM NOT MAKING THIS UP)"IN AN EFFORT TO IMPROVE THE EXPERIENCE OF THE BETTING RING FOR BOTH BOOKMAKERS AND CUSTOMERS,THE NUMBER OF BOOKMAKERS THAT OPERATE IN THE TATTS RING HAVE BEEN REDUCED" YOU REALLY COULDNT MAKE IT UP
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() LADS,HILLS,BETFRED,IF THEY WERE HORSES THEY WOULDNT BE ALLOWED TO RUN UNDER THE NON TRIERS RULE! |

By:
Just got home from my chelmsford experience and there was only 4 bookmakers in attendance and id say 400 paying punters
The most surprising thing was the bookmakers all 4 of them were moved inside which seemed quite strange as to me it detracted from the outside atmosphere ..... Seemed very light buisness being done and a previous post was right betfred shops everywhere ...... will i go again .. yes but think if they decreased the admission price more locals would attend more often .... also not the tracks fault the lack of runners is a concern |

Official attendance figures from Sunday 1st Feb
chelmsford 2442 and 8 Bookies Musselburgh 2653 and 28 Bookies. Looks to me as though there is a severe shortage of choice for the Chelmsford punters! |

was there last night , had to chuckle at the indoor bookies , never seen anything like it
i think this place is a potential goldmine but they are making mistakes no way of getting there unless you drive , you can't even reach it by public transport , they need to put on shuttles from braintree and/or chelmsford stations , even a cab from chelmsford station would be at least £15 , meaning £32 before you start and thats just from chelmsford also £17 on the gate and £22 for the other sunday is too high for what is average racing with a less than average view , i get the feeling they think the product they are offering is better than it is , heard comments about premier track in country by end of year , this is cloud cuckoo land . for example the choice of food last night was a hot dog (£5 with no onions option ) or pay £41 plus for the restaurant . it will do well in summer I'm sure, there are a lot of punters in essex but they need to be realistic here and get the place full first which may need a loss leading strategy first to get the name and reputation up and running ,rather than being greedy from the outset (in my humble opinion) |

ghostlygunner ...... totally agree with your thoughts ... the food options for "joe public" is nothing short of scandalous and the travel links are impossible unless you drive .... what i find hard to digest is that the amount of staff /security was unbelievable loads of them ... maybe reduce them and let the paying customer have a bit more value for money ..... i have emailed the course with my complaints ... i await a reply

By:
Come on Chelmsford the worst track in the country for providing food. Unless you sit down for a meal one tiny food outlet selling a hot dog and pork. Nothing else. Need to provide more food outlets for the average punter. Chelmsford just visit other tracks and see what is on offer.

bookie 1961 ... i actually went for a position over there as I'm local, which i didn't get ( due to having no experience working at a racecourse which is fair enough, though I've been following racing for 35 years and have been to nearly 40 tracks as a punter) , probably as i suggested some of the ideas above
which didn't tie in with their instant profit ideal.i was almost certain it would be a big success but I'm a bit less convinced after a few visits, there is potential for a 1.01 to get beat here if they take their eye off the ball ![]() |

agree ... seems to favour horses from the front ... im going again next week see if my opinion changes

Racing is dross and looks on a par with Southwell but better than Kempton (cannot imagine why anybody would bet there). All mickey mouse - esque. Surface looks like Somme on a better day. Come racing.
