I find the Irish racing commentators indistinguishable from one another.  They're all bad.

You prob had to smile when in one of the comms at least, there was a rather laboured mention too, of distinguishing by the hat colours.

Who was 'the excitable' commentator today, at Leopardstown?

Jerry Hannon. I have to admit I'll miss Dessie when he goes. Yes he's getting on and yes he has been making mistakes but from when I started to go racing he was the voice I would hear. Jerry gets himself all flustered at the end of races because he tries to say something about the winners previous runs etc as it's passing the line instead of A wins, B second and so on. Richard Pugh is as poor also imop.

This is still the greatest ever Jerry Hanlon commentary.
From about 7.30 onwards, you know there's no way he can maintain it. Fair play for getting the full sponsors name check in though between the last two obstacles, and I don't think I was the only person who thought he may had suffered a heart attack on the run in.

dessie is part of the furniture of irish racing

Graham Goode and Aussie Jim McGrath were similarly "part of the furniture" of UK racing but they, like Dessie, hung around a bit too long.

dessie has been the voice of irish racing for as long as I've been interested in racing
GG and aussie jim were never that over here
the only voice there has ever been, and ever will be, over here is sir peter

Jerry gets himself bit excited and is loud, but it's not  an 'act' or contrived, I think it's just his enthusiasm for the sport / race calling.
I recall an egg and spoon race round one of the rabbit tracks in Ireland, where there were 3 of them going at it in a close finish, and Jerry's commentary reached such a 'crescendo' that I thought he was going to self-combust!
