I am as you may know one of the biggest knockers of bookmakers and their punitive actions towards punters who have the audacity to take best prices. So today I went into Corals and asked for £500 each to win on two horses, one at 5/1 the other at 6/1. At first the manager refused but when I informed him of the new policy he seemed unaware of it (perhaps). As soon as he received my query regarding the new offer he told me I was level red as a customer, even told me my first name. He did however then get on the phone and checked . He became quite distraught on the phone as it was clear that upper management were telling him to take the bet. He clearly did not want to and was saying he would take this further with head office. When he came back to me he was very grumpy saying that taking best from me would be on a bet by bet basis.

Did not notice any price differences from the net although others may have done a more detailed survey. How long will this last, who knows but at the moment you have to congratulate Corals so far.

That's irrelevant but I think there will be plenty of disgruntled shop managers today unless this one's name is Joe Coral Jnr and dad had not informed him.

Do individual managers get paid on the basis of how much their shop makes?

Fair play to Corals... so far !

Frog, yes they do !

Olias, the shop team get an annual bonus based on profitability ( manager the biggest cut), some managers are relying on the four figures at Christmas ! Best of luck, and can we keep future transactions on the one thread ?....

And the mind set of Senior Managers is that low profits mean you're a c rap manager !

B ollox I know, but....

HR need to sort out the incentive system then.

An individual shop could be hurt by a accepting bigger bets if they have  a bad run (the same as a punter) but an estate of shops can spread the risk more. It is understandable that an individual manager does not want to take the risk.

Maybe this is the key reason my the shops no longer take bigger bets.

No Frog it's not, it's company policy !

You would be amazed how many people who work in betting shops don't even know what the companies' current modus operandi is ! Fair play to Corals, let's hope this lasts, and hopefully the competition follow suit !

halcyon days,
Are you sure about managers getting a bonus just based on their own shop? How old is your info? The last I knew was that individual shop bonuses had been changed to a bonus on the area, so that whichever shop caught a huge return all the managers had to pay for it.

if i was a betting shop manager of a huge bookmaker i would want to lay as many big bets as i could.

really cannot understand the attitude of business acumen of that manager.

Had an account with them for years and wouldn't say I win massive amounts it's just little and often - maybe a change of junior management decides to p@@s their regular customers off - Basically they can go and fk themselves

Not sure how any of you can bet on one sport after being restricted on the horses..

Every account that I have ever had with the clueless shirkers has been closed full stop...

There will come a time when such operatives have to lay a decent bet to all punters but my liver will not let me live that long..

Incidentally I am thinking of going back into the industry and writing a book.A proper book. With chapters and suchlike...Mischief

Mulling over a couple of offers..

Watch this space.

Plenty of online "Bookmakers" here to work with..

But I fancy a few weeks in the shops first just to see how they are doing in the last 14 years since I left..

It's not like that now mate, sporting knowledge, even using a Genie 247 ( single block/crash block when I started in'73)... noise of the machines, staff are told to have them at a high volume to entice the steam tugs !

You're working with young gel's who aren't interested.... 18.00/22.00 hrs an absolute killer !

These horrible nefarious machines' have killed a reasonably enjoyable job ! Sad

Agree Halcyon I loved the shops...

My last job though was "Trading Controller" at a Public Company..

However the World has moved on and the best jobs around here involve organisations betting into Worldwide Totes and getting a commission win or lose..

Halcyon I will tell you what it is like around here..

An 18 year old son of my best pal has been given a weeks trial...

If he gets the job he will be on £25k a year..

But he will still be given a monkey if he is given the Spanish Archer...

The online companies around here are not the ones that you may expect...

my most local 10 coral shops hand over winning bets as though I am taking it from their grannys' pockets. i only bet on one sport, and they know it. it will never change.

i went into the bookmakers on Thursday lunchtime to watch a race.

seemed to me that they had turned the volume of the races down on purpose?

all that could hear was those bloody arcade machines.

racing seems just to be on in the background whilst they concentrate on the neds and housewifes playing the machines.

I can tell you that in the 70s when the results went against, and you to settle countless bets with 5,6 or 7 winners on them you needed several drinks on the evening to get to sleep ! The brain was hyper !  Grin
