I am not a fan or voter for UKIP but Farrage is by far the most charismatic party leader and the others underestimate him at their peril. There is also a growing mood (rightly so) that we have had enough of this two party system. Neither do anything for reducing inequality and the growing mood is that we are fed up with both main parties and a protest vote is as good as anything.

All the problems with infrastructure i.e not enough schools, not enough A+E and hospitals generally and not enough jobs, have been brought about by politicians of all parties not investing enough to meet the demands of an increasing population. If you want 70m+ of all nationalities then you must plan and invest accordingly to make sure everybody can live with sufficient services. I have to say, though, there would be no need for increasing the population if our education system gave opportunities to the talent lower down the social scale (like grammar schools) thus producing a skilled society that could serve itself without recourse to unlimited immigration. Nigel is a sideshow but he draws attention where it is needed rather than dear old Ed whose big master plan is to give 16 y o s the vote

Report matt hughes December 10, 2014 3:02 PM GMT
UKIP started as a party that objected to the EU on largely big business reasons, it had no problem with EU migration, it just was not an issue. The party has only recently gained support because of ordinary people becoming worried about immigration and UKIP being the only acceptable party prepared to voice against immigration. And realistically Nigel Farage is the only politician to articulate against immigration and to survive the media onslaught, he is a ground breaker, UKIP has been more of a vehicle for him and probably still UKIP is just a name without any greater legitimacy.

Why no mainstream parties were prepared to listen to popular concerns about immigration before support for UKIP and why the media make it their business to try and destroy UKIP are interesting questions.

Unfortunately immigration, like the weather, is now uncontrollable.
Report contrary45 December 10, 2014 3:13 PM GMT
Agree Matt but we must have a government who would leave the EU (IF THE REFERENDUM SAYS SO) and restrict non EU immigration. Also, give foreign aid on a case by case manner i.e natural disasters so it is all accountable not used on India's space programme.
Report Dr Crippen December 10, 2014 3:28 PM GMT
If you think that being in the EU is bad for the country along with mass immigration then vote for UKIP.

Don't think that the other parties would do anything about the issues without the pressure that losing votes to UKIP is putting on them.

The other three parties have already proved that.
They simply ignored the rebellion against immigration before UKIP forced them to take notice.

Whatever you think about Farage one thing he is is consistent. I went to school with him and his views now are the same views he had over 30 years ago. He wanted to be head boy at Dulwich College but there was a petition by a group of teachers urging for him not to get the position because of his views on immigration. He didn't get selected in the end but did end up as a senior prefect. I always liked the bloke, he was always very good company and liked a few pints. At debating he was completely unbeatable.

I don't like many aspects of the UKIP manifesto but I do share their views on the EU which seems to me to be the biggest drain on UK resources and freedom. The EU bureaucracy is set on reducing the competitive advantage that it knows the UK has by dreaming up regulations that penalise us most. And we have to pay twice as high salaries for MEPs compared to MPs, twice as much to EU bureaucrats than UK ones etc. What possible benefit do we get in return? And to cap it all, the French blame our high benefits for the refugees in Calais. They should be housing them and giving them asylum or paying the cost of transporting them back to their home country. If our membership
is not sorted out soon UKIP will win a future General Election outright.

Be honest, the whole "race" issue has gone so far that there doesn't seem to be any way back now.

One of the biggest problems we have in this country socially and legally is that we have been

Report Johnny_Mustang December 11, 2014 10:44 AM GMT
I'll willingly concede that Farage is charismatic and has a certain charm which the less intelligent might find powerfully seductive but his campaign is built on feet of clay and we'll see no more of him post-May 2015 other than the occasional stint on News I Got News For You.
Report sageform December 11, 2014 10:47 AM GMT
Not sure that I would call the EU an evil empire. It is just reflecting the norm in most EU countries where bureaucrats have always ruled the rest of the populace and free enterprise has been seen as the enemy, particularly if it is not French/Spanish or wherever. Because the British have different values, we are seen as the enemy who are trying to compete "unfairly" with the sclerotic businesses in the other countries. You only have to go to Spain and see that hardly anything is open in the afternoons and restaurants not until 8.30 at night. The last time we went there on holiday we ended up buying food in the mornings and eating in the hotel room.

Harnessing the xenophobia of the average Brit, he whips up a torrent of hatred of foreigners  among White Van men, conveniently ignoring the fact that he's married to a German whom he employs as his secretary, against parliamentary rules at an enormous salary paid out of the public purse!

Bit  radical at times but hey ho

If asked who I would vote for the Election manifesto is as follows

The basic principle should be if you aint paid anything in you should not get anything out(that goes for British scroungers as well)

Another is that no one on benefits should be better off than any worker

Prison sentences should mean what they so on the label, no time of for good behaviour but add to them for bad.

The parole board should be accountable (sacking etc) for any one they release and who goes on to re offend

And anyone who wants to be a lawyer or a politician should be taken out and disposed off (as Billy Connolly said dont vote it only encourages them)

P.S this goes for the bleeding heart liberals as well
